Yeah there are dark elements in the books that the show did expand on. She did lose her parents as a baby. She is sent to 2 families that I don't believe are as abusive as the show but they were neglectful but they did tell her no else would take so one can see what that did to her psyche. Plus one of them did habe a drunk husband.

I have them all on kindle, I saw a book of them all in one and it was huge, kindle is much lighter.

I have the books but haven't read them yet. In a way I wish I had waited to watch until after I had read, but I love the show.

The issue I have with them is that I see what the writers are trying to do, I just don't feel it at all. Maybe because they're just kids.
