This takes nothing away from the fact that both of them have already proved themselves, dominating the game for over a decade. I get you because you can probably tell I'm a Ronaldo fan () and I feel the same about him.

Like I said above, what makes this extra sad is that this was probably the last chance for Messi and Ronaldo. The living legends most likely won't ever get the biggest trophy of the game.

It's true that their national teams aren't as good as their clubs and sadly their individual effort isn't always enough (and they can't always perform at their highest level). So heartbreaking moments like these happen. But I believe it takes nothing away from their legendary status.
And the thing that's annoying is that it's people who don't watch soccer on a regular basis who are questioning them. If some of those people watched their games ofr Barcelona and Real Madrid and they would see how great they are and how fun it is to watch them.

Spain was beating Russia and while I was typing this Russia scored on a penalty.

1-1, at the beginning Russia barely attacked, game was mostly on their half but Spain played too slow, Russia opened up and that stupid penalty.

Exactly! During the World Cup suddenly everyone’s an expert for a month. So true that anyone who actually follows their careers knows how undoubtedly great they are.

I’m not surprised because Pique’s got plenty of handballs.

Hopefully Spain can take care of this in the 2nd half.

Extra time folks.

Spain had tonnes of possession but wasted it and Russia defended well. It was pretty absorbing

Penalties! And Spain just lost one!

The game was so boring though.

I don’t usually say this but this was SO undeserved for Russia. Completely undeserved.

Russia did not deserve that win but they defended and defended and defended. It was a negative approach but it worked for them. World Cup drama indeed

^ My commentator said it best, it was anti football. Football lost today.

Russia had a plan, it wasn't pretty but it worked

I did say Russia may get to QFs or possibly SF given they are at home

^ I don't think the home advantage had anything to do with it. It was 100 % about totally parking the bus.

Almost time for a new thread. How about something like "World Cup of shocks and surprises! No one can predict what will happen next!" for a title? Or something better worded.

Home advantage does have s lot of influence and support - it brings the 12th man into the game. Russia just defended and defended very successfully. As a England fan I know about penalty shootout disappointment. Twice we lost to Germany in WC 1990 and Euro 96 on penalty shootouts and on both occasions we were the better team
