Oh my goodness they almost equalised in the last kick of the game.

Best game of the tournament so far

Congratulations France, they are into the QFs

FINAL SCORE: ARGENTINA 3 FRANCE 4

All I say Is:
Argentina defence was Messi
The players looked Messi
The whole team and management looked Messi

This is what makes soccer the greatest sport on earth and why the World Cup is the greatest tournament on earth

Totally agree about football being the greatest sport and the World Cup being the greatest event.

That was completely unncessary and stupid especially from Argentina who were supposed to try to get an equalizer. Especially Otamendi is trash, that was the second time in this tournament he’s kicked the ball toward a player who’s down. Where is his red card?

Argentina have a lot of soulsearching to do. They need a coach with better tactics. Maybe next time don’t leave your best striker out of the squad because he doesn’t ”match” with your favorite.

Anyway, so happy for France!

And for the next hour I’ll try not to think about the next match. xD

Don't Cry For Me Argentina...Mbappe bap bap

Personally Argentina were very lucky to reach the last 16 so I think justice was served when France knocked them out.

Now ready for mental dental Suarez

Got a feeling Uruguay will beat Portugal because they do look seriously good and Suarez is fighting to play instead of biting to play

I agree.

I am seriously worried about Uruguay, they have a very good defense seeing they haven’t conceded yet. And of course Cavani-Suarez is probably the most effective striker duo right now. It won’t definitely be easy for Portugal to win today but we’ll see. Maybe Ronaldo will outscore them.

I just hope for a good game for Portugal no matter what happens.

Well Uruguay scored early and that Suarez-Cavani strike partnership is dangerous. Portugal are going to have a problem

ETA: Uruguay beat Portugal 2-1 with fantastic Cavani goals. That has resolved one quarter final match: France v Uruguay

Messi and Ronaldo go home on the same night

Sad for Portugal. I feel like they played so well, had a lot of possession but were just unlucky with finishing. And made two major mistakes of letting Cavani score.

I’m still proud of them. They were the only ones that were able to score against Uruguay though.

Just feeling sad and frustrated because this game could have gone either way. Portugal definitely didn’t go down easy so I’m proud of them.

Sad that this was probably Ronaldo’s last World Cup game (same for Messi). We say goodbye to legends today.

(And France is gonna finish Uruguay. )

Ronaldo simply didn't play and Uruguay stopped him from playing his natural game. Also poor finishing from Portugal and Cavani that cost them.

France v Uruguay QF will be interesting

He did play but like the former Uruguay nt player Forlan said if you stop Ronaldo you stop 50 % of Portugal. Today Uruguay succeeded to take the space away from him so he didn’t get much chances. I wish he had scored though, he would have deserved it.

I’m also proud of the whole team because they played well together. Love that Pepe scored.

Just so very sad because this was winnable. If only a few things had gone differently. But that’s football.

Now I’m gonna do and think about completely different things, I don’t care about this tournament until the next match.

^ He’s still the GOAT.

Plus he broke another record in this tournament (only about his 1000th one) like he does pretty much all the time.

He is a living legend and nothing changes that.

(And I hate comparing them but you can say the same thing about Messi.)

ETA: Aw, you edited your post.

Just watched the highlights of the game. Cavani's second goal. The first one was good too, Suarez and Cavani are such a great team.

Both Portugal and Argentina rely too much on one player. Both are legends and very good but they can't carry a team on their own all the time.

^I agree regarding Portugal and Argentina relying on one player. In terms of footballing legends, it is a sad day to lose 2 of the greatest footballers on the same night but there are still plenty of talents out there in the WC - Mbappe is the new star, he reminds me of Thierry Henry

It's a real shame that both Messi and Ronaldo are both out of the World Cup.

Which ever side of the Messi and Ronaldo debate you're on I'm sure everyone can say they're both the 2 best players in the world. It's also unfortunate that people will use the fact that they never won the World Cup to question their greatness. I had to defend they on twitter to someone.

And the miracle almost happened at the end of the game...

But you can't win a World Cup without a well-organized team, especially in defence.

I feel sad because of Messi.

In 2006, he was kept mostly on the bench because he was a teenager.
In 2010, he had Maradona as a coach, who was just as chaotic as Sampaoli.
In 2014, luck wasn't on his side.
In 2018, the AFA chaos and this completely disorganized team.

That goal he missed in the 2014 final...

Maybe the World Cup is not meant to be for him.

As the saying goes: It's the World Cup's loss.

I love the World Cup anyway. Looking forward to today's matches!

As much as I like Portugal's manager, he didn't make the best tactical decisions with the team. He could have used another striker, Andre Silva (who was very effective with Ronaldo in the qualifications) or Quaresma to take the pressure off of Ronaldo a bit. It didn't have to rely on one man too much. (The same is probably true for Argentina.)

That's what makes it extra sad, the feeling of the last chance.

Mbappe is one of the new stars for sure. I didn't realize he appears like that for most people though because I've watched two amazing seasons from him already since he emerged in the Champions League in season 16-17.

Agreed 100 %!!!

This takes nothing away from the fact that both of them have already proved themselves, dominating the game for over a decade. Maybe people have become blind to that because they've set the standard so high and we think it's the norm. We should just all be happy we get to witness the two greats of the game.

I get you because you can probably tell I'm a Ronaldo fan () and I feel the same about him.

Like I said above, what makes this extra sad is that this was probably the last chance for Messi and Ronaldo. The living legends most likely won't ever get the biggest trophy of the game.

It's true that their national teams aren't as good as their clubs and sadly their individual effort isn't always enough (and they can't always perform at their highest level). So heartbreaking moments like these happen. But I believe it takes nothing away from their legendary status.

---

Soooo anyway, this was the best moment of yesterday's game:

Today I'm supporting Spain. Pretty neutral about Croatia vs. Denmark but I think Croatia will win.
