Werth's a good player, but I'm not sure he's worth (ha ha) that much to a team in the Nationals' position.
And that was a steal for Gonzalez by the Red Sox. Very irritating. |

20+ million a year for most of his 30s for a speed guy with a career .337 OBP and then sticking him in Fenway's LF for half his games, effectively neutralizing his range...
He'll be a boost short term, but, overall, the Red Sox apparently decided to beat out the Yankees' pursuit of Lee for most ridiculous contract this offseason. Really weird follow-up to stealing Gonzalez away from SD. Edit: Closest competitor was apparently the Angels at 7/$108 million. Makes it even better. Last edited by -Bianca-; 12-08-2010 at 11:05 PM |

Well, you know how it is, the Yankees can't stand to lose.
They weren't going to take Boston trying to grab a stranglehood on anything, even ridiculousness, lying down. |

I don't know about the Red Sox, but the Yankees raise prices on all non-Legends seats almost every year, regardless of what they do in the FA market, anyway. Given how much they fleeced the city in building a new stadium, I'd prefer that money, at least in theory, go back into the on field product somehow and not the Steinbrenner family's pockets.
I wouldn't be shocked if Lee ends up staying in Texas though. When you account for cost of living and taxes, their offered deals (which are all going to potentially kill that team, as they can't just eat those last few years like a light afternoon snack like the Yankees can) are going to end up pretty close to what NY is offering. |

Wow, Cliff Lee is NOT going to the Yankees! Not even the Rangers either.

It was pretty stunning.
However, after the initial talk about how he took a pay cut, he actually took a high AAV and the six year option is apparently incredibly easy to vest. The only "cut" is the seventh year, really. Quite the rotation Philly's got, at least until age/use starts catching up with some of them though. |
