My guess would be that they didn't die from oxygen deprivation but from being bitten. When she woke up to that one zombie biting people I think it was someone who didn't step forward when asked who was bit so everyone asleep slowly got bit as more and more people turned to walkers. She didn't get bit because the dead zombie on top of her probably masked her smell.

It seemed like it all started with that one zombie she saw when she woke up. It looked like that one had already bitten one or two people then after she killed it she passed back out with it on top of her so I'm guessing the ones who were bitten just went to town on the rest.
