The gameplay got me slightly excited but it should be a new ip at this point

That's exactly it. The present day story has gone nowhere since Desmond died. They should put the AC franchise to rest already, or at least take a break from it, and just launch a new IP so they don't have to shoehorn in certain elements to make it vaguely Assassin-y or fit with existing AC lore. Origins and Odyssey are great games. They, especially Odyssey, just aren't very Assassin's Creed.

In 2012, Alex Hutchinson (creative director of AC3) called ancient Egypt, along with feudal Japan and WWII, "the three worst settings for an Assassin's Creed game".

I loved Egypt and I would freaking love Japan. It was what I was hoping for this year. From all the assassin’s creed games I played, 3 was my least favorite by far.
