Sorry to start this topic here. But, what are everyone's thoughts about the ratings? 0.4 is not good for a premiere (I wasn't expecting a huge jump in ratings, but, I thought it would get 0.5). The ratings were okay for most of last season, hence early renewal, but it seems to have taken a downward turn since then. There's a great deal of people saying that should the show drop to 0.3 the CW will pull it from the line up before the end of the season. Now, I have had my frustrations with the show. But, I wouldn't want to see it pulled off the air. Not before they had time to sort out an ending anyway.

Thanks for bringing up the topic. I think it is certainly relevant, considering the ratings are particularly low. It will be interesting to see what the next few weeks look like.
A lot of fans weren't necessarily excited about the premiere because it wasn't promoted very well (even though it turned out to be a pretty good episode). The promo for the show hasn't been very good in general. It is a tough time slot, which is why the CW also looks at a lot of other factors including the Live+3/7 day ratings -- a place where Reign is typically one of the biggest gainers. They also take online viewing into greater consideration than most networks do. It was one of the reasons they renewed shows early last year, since Reign and others had huge showings online. Only time will tell. They don't release online viewing data, so we can't gauge any of that too well, but the next few weeks will give us a little better picture. I think the slot is actually more difficult than it was last year. Three new shows premiered in the same slot against Reign's season premiere. Those shows will likely dip a bit in the weeks to come, now that the initial curiosity has worn off and folks start making season-long decisions on what they'll be watching. Quote:

The CW isn't like normal networks. There are so many other factors aside from just ratings. I am not saying Reign isn't in at least a little danger of cancelation, but I highly doubt it'd be yanked suddenly. For starts, the CW doesn't have much to replace it with. And, as Kate pointed out, they look at the online viewings, iTunes numbers, et al. to really decide if it's worth their while.
Even if they do decide to cancel it, I have a feeling it won't be until the end of the current season or, at the very least, the winter hiatus. |
