I love the promotional push these two are getting. Especially considering this show does almost zero promotional pushing to begin with.

Hopefully there'll be more. People (particularly some shippers of a certain ship) are saying the ratings got worse because MF and KB married but truthfully I only think they make the entire thing more compelling.
The second chances/choices thing is interesting though. I think it's an aspect that needs to be made clear at some point, I'd love to ear the two say they ultimately married the right person. No pressure, I'll enjoy the journey

Ratings go down EVERY SINGLE Spring in the US once Daylight Savings Time hits, which was about a month ago. This isn't exactly unknown to the networks. Every single CW show is down, not just a Reign. Are the other shows down because Mary chose Francis and Bash is now married to Kenna? The rating for the BoP were not good, they fell each episode, the worst being ep 12 when Francis returned with almost zero promotion from the network. He wasn't in the aired promos at all, so if you're not a fandom viewer you likely had no clue he was even back, if that mattered to you. But the greater point is that MB either didn't bring in new viewers, or didn't retain viewers, if you think show ratings trends follow ship health - which I don't.

I honestly don't know why anyone (a) harps on this, or (b) listens to anyone who does. The people that harp or jump on them and try to twist them to suit their own purposes - especially in this case - clearly have no idea what they're talking about or historical trends of US television watching.

The only thing that can be said definitively is that ratings peaked at ep 8, then fell steadily to ep 12, rebounded with 13 and then were fine for 14-16 - so if you were turned off by Mary choosing Francis or Mary loving Francis more you clearly didn't care enough to make a significant drop in viewership. This most recent drop coincides with DST being instituted and it still being light outside a lot of places when the show airs, which means people don't settle in to watch shows as quickly as they do in the colder and darker months. Thus less live viewers.

ETA, ratings were healthy through ep 16, not 15. I keep forgetting this last ep was 18.

I definitely will as soon as I'm back at my laptop. I also apologize for the typos in my last post, I re-read it now and it sounds horrible, it doesn't make sense omg going to edit it later.

I do agree about the ships though. I don't think it's reasonable to think they influence anything, and btw we fans don't make the ratings unless we have the black box, so it's a pointless argument.

Fandom thinks it understands ratings and the choices that are made in relation to them. Fandom has no idea.

Maybe ratings are down because I cycled out of being a ratings household as of last week! Which is true. It's actually a more valid argument than most of the ones I've seen made.

It really might! I cycled out the afternoon of Thursday before last, which is when the ratings dropped so much this time. Not saying it's the entire picture, because it's not. But while I know they picked someone who is demographically similar to me, she likely doesn't have the exact same viewing patterns as I do. Is she a live watcher of Reign? Probably not. So while it's likely only one piece of the puzzle, it's part of the puzzle I'm sure.

I still stick with my DST annual drop as the main explaination.

It says a lot about the ratings system though, doesn't it? It's very similar here in Italy, and there have been contentions more than once. It happened, for instance, that millions of people were supposedly watching a show that was off for lack of signal/technical problems years ago, of course it wasn't possible but people in the household simply were too lazy to reset the box.

I don't want to dismantle the system though, it's still the only metre for ratings that we have and it has to be until we find a new one. And yet it's so random, it's odd to think that shows are renewed or axed based on something so volatile.
