I don't think he would have carried through on that, unless she actually killed Mary or Bash. I think he just wanted to scare her. She was probably more freaked out that he actually said that to her than the threat itself. He just wanted her to know he was serious.

He knew that threatening her life was the only way to get her to stop her murder plots. He didn't want anyone he loved to die, including Catherine.
