I just think it would make a lot more sense if it was the other way around. Especially considering Mary didn't wait for Francis, and she left possibly with the plans of forever in mind.

But he didn't know that was her plan so it makes sense for her to be holding on to him longer knowing she had to leave and not wanting to.

Still makes it seem like she is a liar.

We'll see what Mary does in the upcoming arc, but honestly so far it kind of seems like she is a liar. Especially if our hunch is correct in regards of Mary using Bash to push Francis away

That doesn't make the scene or what she did any less heartbreaking for both of them though.

but HOW would it have made more sense? it makes sense for her to hang onto him because she knows what she's about to do and she's trying to have as much of him as she can for as long as she can

lol no. Francis had no idea she was going to leave, she had said "I'll wait for you" and he trusts her. Mary on the other hand knew she was going to leave, of course she hold onto him as much as she could.
