GoT Season 8 Discussion #10: "I get why people were pissed. I totally get it." - Emilia
This is a place to discuss Dany's scenes and everything else from season 8 of Game of Thrones. "Because it comes out of f—king nowhere. I'm flabbergasted. Absolutely never saw that coming." - Emilia https://www.eonline.com/news/1073665...aimed-her-life "Everyone is going to have their own opinion and they're fully entitled to them." - Emilia https://amp.dailytelegraph.com.au/li...mpression=true "I understand the disappointment of some of the fans." - Emilia "I think we could have shot a few more episodes to conclude in a more satisfying way the story of some of the characters." - Emilia https://www.archyde.com/emilia-clark...hats-for-sure/ "In our minds, we thought the Randyll Tarly scene was disturbing. Then I watched it with a crowd of people at a friend’s house and they were cheering. Weirdly, the audience just didn’t care. They loved Dany." - Bryan Cogman How the Game of Thrones writers misjudged Daenerys Targaryen’s final arc "I get why people were pissed. I totally get it. But, me being the actor, you can’t do justice to the character that you poured your blood, sweat, and tears into for a decade without getting on the same page. So like, I’m not just going to be there being like, ‘Fine, I’ll do the scene, whatever. I’m so pissed.’ You have to turn up." Emilia Clarke Gets Why People Were Pissed About Game of Thrones Finale "Any ending would have upset everybody but our ending REALLY REALLY did seem to REALLY upset people" - Emilia __________________

The arrogance of D&D that they felt they could have this twist pull off without Emilia even knowing till last moment. She should not have been totally shocked, she should have known her character was headed this way even if she had to sign an agreement to keep it to herself. Like what they did with Alan Rickman in the Harry Potter films, they told him Snape's background and fate so he could consider them in his portrayal of the character before this stuff was punished in the books.
But Emilia played her the way she did, as a leader ruthless to enemies but well intentioned in general, did and D&D never thought it was necessary to say a word because "subverting expectations" is all you need to write a compelling story apparently. |

I don't think anything D&D could have written would have done it. Dany was never supposed to "turn evil." She was always supposed to be a morally grey character. D&D failed to see that and to write that. Also yes they should have told Emilia like JKR did with Alan Rickman. Very good example here!

It was a badly written plot contrivance which compacted her descent into madness into like 4-5 scenes which were also mostly badly written. Essentially D&D wanted to convey that she came to understand the only method to break the wheel of the world was to destroy it, and the ultimate tragedy is that the wheel remains unbroken at her departure...just starting a new revolution.
There is almost certainly a longer campaign in the books where she goes north to defeat the night king, where she learns that the north won't kneel. There's almost certainly a longer campaign against Euron, where she learns the dead cannot die. Cat is both drowned and from the north. There's almost certainly a longer campaign against the Lannisters, where she learns they will pay those debts. Etc. There's a whole missing winter in the show. It simply wasn't written well and was hurried to get to Star Wars. It failed spectacularly. |

I have issues with the primary reason for Dany to undo 7 seasons of character development is a character death from the same season.
Also, didn't all her handmaidens, her husband, her horse, AND her favorite bodyguard die at the end of season 1 and beginning of season 2? She's been thru this, fallen down, and got back up again. I also think they knew each of their ideas for "why" were crap, and so they left it purposefully ambigious, with a dash of "the MADNESS HAS TAKEN HER" __________________

Season 5 and 6 showed that D&D couldn't write.
Season 7 and 8 showed that they just didn't care anymore. |

I don't think anyone says 5, 6 and 7 are flawless, just still pretty good and worth watching unlike season 8.
But things definitely started going off the rails and getting weird by season 5. |

Yes there were problems, but those seasons didn't retroactively ruin all the previous seasons with their stupidity.
