What was frustrating is that we got all that Sarah/Paul in the beginning, and then from season 2 on we got nothing, and then when they were finally in the same scenes again, BAM, it's all over

As desperately sad as I was to see Paul die just as he had so totally and completely redeemed himself, I'd just like to post kudos to the writers for so completely filling in not only aspects of his character that had been questions from the moment he was introduced in season one, but also for seeming to effortlessly clear up numerous hanging plot points.
Because this has become my new favorite show (I'm quite late to the party and only discovered it this season!), I went back (yeah, I'm obsessed enough that I own all of the episodes after a marathon that started with me thinking, "I think I've heard good things about that show... is it worth getting started on it?!?) and re-watched all of Paul's early episodes and the realization that he'd been giving "Beth/Sarah" the excuse that he was going out of town to visit "Cody" when he'd really been visiting Dr. Coady made all of his strange/untrustworthy behavior throughout season one/two suddenly make sense. So, as much as I'm going to miss him (because, no matter how little I trusted him from the moment that Sarah began to suspect that he might not be trustworthy, I have to admit that I always harbored hopes -- until Cal came around and immediately seemed, to me at least, to be the superior option) not only because he was, TBH, incredibly pretty to look at (especially when he took his clothes off, which often seemed to not only be his main role on the show but also to be one of the defining aspects of just how shady a character he could be...). So RIP, Paul. Is it strange for me to say that I'm actually glad that season 3 Paul never appeared naked, no matter how hunky the actor still is, in the sense that somehow the fact that he died 'with his boots on' is just one aspect of my admiration for the writing of this show? |

I've just developed a fascination with the way that the show's EPs use names to foreshadow plot points/as meaningful messages in their own right: IOW, (and this is all off-topic, so I'm sorry!), Cosima is named for the real-world Cosima (who seems very likely to have been named for the show, Cosmos, by Carl Sagan, especially since Tat has talked -- sorry, I can't remember which of her interviews on YouTube is the one in which she mentions it -- about her character having an unseen tattoo, based on the show's science adviser's real tatoos, of a dandelion head, its seeds floating through the air... which was a major theme/expositional device on Carl Sagan's Cosmos...). When writers make up names for characters that have multiple layers of meaning (instead of just using "unusual" names like Cosima), I tend to sit up, take notice, and get really interested in just how deeply intelligent the rest of their writing is, which is why I noticed the Cody/Dr. Coady connection.... _______________ But just to bring this back to being on topic, I totally shipped them too, in season one. I actually count the first moment that I fell for their relationship as the moment when Paul slipped his hand into Sarah's when she marched into the room and he told her that she shouldn't have come to such a dangerous situation because he'd told her to run. Ya gotta love a man who tells his woman to run for the hills, then tells her he loves her with actions instead of words when she fights for his life.... It would've been so great to see them actually together one day |
