love the character of Tom, he came a long way, the growth over the seasons.

Violet, we'll always remember her and her flights with her cousin Isobel.

Yeah Thomas has been mostly evil. I don't like him but he is good with the kids, especially George.

I miss all the Violet & Isobel sparring. Those were scenes worth watching over & over.

Thomas evil for most of the series. I was happy to see him in the movie where he realized he wasn't alone being gay.

Julian Fellowes will begin plotting, then writing, the screenplay for a second Downton Abbey feature film towards the end of the year — and it will be Maggie Smith's farewell to the Crawley clan.

In the first Downton movie, released last September, Smith's Dowager Countess of Grantham told granddaughter Lady Mary, towards the end of the picture, that she was dying.

That took the story of the Crawley family and their retainers up to 1927. I can reveal that the sequel will resume in 1928.

I asked Fellowes if Smith would make a last appearance. He would neither confirm nor deny such a storyline but something in his eyes suggested that we haven't seen the last of the redoubtable dowager.

The cast are to be asked about their availability to film next year. To date, the Downton film has taken close to £150 million globally. On a recent Delta flight to New York I was amused to observe that 30 out of 36 passengers in one cabin were watching it.

Meanwhile, Fellowes is in highly active mode. His new venture for Netflix, The English Game, about the origins of football, underpinned by the class clash between posh southerners and working-class Scots, begins streaming on March 20. It's likely to be followed by other dramas on Netflix, exploring how football developed around the world.

Coming to ITV later next month is the six-part Belgravia, Fellowes' scintillating study of ancient upper-class and nouveau riche families in 1840s London. It stars Tamsin Greig, Harriet Walter, Philip Glenister and Tom Wilkinson, plus Royal Academy of Dramatic Art graduate Jack Bardoe in a role that should propel him up the star-making ladder.

Fellowes is now in the States to oversee his multi-part HBO series The Gilded Age, which is shooting in Manhattan, Long Island and in Rhode Island — in the mansions known as cottages.
