Thor had an idyllic childhood, brought up in Asgard as the treasured son of Odin and his wife Frigga. His best friend and playmate was his adopted brother Loki, and though they were rivals for their father's throne, they still remained close companions. Brought up in the warrior culture of the Asgardians, Thor valued strength, courage, and loyalty above all else. He desired to be exactly like his father the war hero, and often remarks on the monsters he will slay and the wars he will win when he is king. He proves himself a great warrior, often leading his band of warriors (which includes Loki, the Lady Sif, and the Warrior Three) on adventures. However, he is also known to be reckless when Loki jokingly reminds him that he would be dead had he not used a smoke veil to allow them to escape during one battle. Although Odin chose him as his heir, he openly remarked that he thought Thor was a "vain, greedy, cruel boy" after Thor started an ill-advised war against the Frost Giants. It is later revealed that Loki was never in contention for the throne because of his Frost Giant heritage, meaning that regardless of his boyish attitude, Thor was always meant to be king.

Adopted by Odin and Frigga at the end of the Asgardians' war with the jotuns, Loki was treated as a prince of Asgard and was never informed of his true heritage throughout his youth. Loki is smaller and thinner, and has darker eye and hair colour while paler in complexion than the Asgardians and is treated with less respect and acceptance because of it. Throughout their childhood it is implied that Loki spent much of his time trying to prove himself as Thor's equal while being ridiculed for his obvious inadequacies which led to him studying sorcery and magic instead of trying to acquire strength that he would never attain. Admittedly jealous of his step-brother, Thor, and anxious about a kingdom ruled by the loud and violent God of Thunder, Loki allowed several Jotuns to enter Asgard who then proceeded to try and steal the Casket of Ancient Winters during Thor's coronation. Later Loki admits that it was 'just a bit of fun' meant to ruin his brother's special day and to keep Asgard from his reign for a short while longer. In the wake of this intrusion, Thor opted to launch a counterattack on Jotunheim with a number of his friends, and while Loki initially tried to dissuade his brother, he eventually relented and accompanied him, though he left word with a servant to immediately inform their father of the plan to prevent any further harm.

Do you think we might get a glimpse of Jotun!Loki in the second movie? I always wondered what Thor's reaction would be and how it would affect Loki to reveal his true form to him.

miranstarr 05-05-2013 05:52 AM

We might, especially if they get into dire situations. It might come to pass that Loki is way more powerful in his Jotun form than his Asgardian form. I know how much he hates the Jotun side of him, which he sees as weak and monstrous. :/

A big point of the second movie seems to be showing us the other realms and races, and it would be a neat reference to Jotunheimr to include such a scene, as well.
No idea how it would go if actually got it - in The Avengers Loki made quite a show of fully embracing his "monstrous" side, but there is also crippling self-hatred there. He might very well throw his true nature in Thor's face and taunt him over it, the way he did right after his brother grabbed him from the plane.

miranstarr 05-05-2013 07:24 AM

I'm actually quite surprised that Loki didn't Jotun out in Avengers. He could have really scared the people if he had wanted to. A monstrous blue guy strutting around killing people with his magical glowstick of destiny? But then he really does hate that side of him. He sees the Jotuns as weak because they were defeated and had their powers stripped from them. Everything he knows about that planet is what he has learned as an Æsir.

Hawthorn 05-05-2013 07:46 AM

I also think that deep down he still identifies as an Aesir, even if on the surface he keeps rejecting all associations to his family and the upbringing he sees as a lie. Even at his maddest in The Avengers, while he tries to conquer a planet to call his own and give him a new, better identity, he introduces himself as "Loki of Asgard."

But it's also possible Whedon didn't use his true form simply to avoid a reference that those who hadn't seen Thor wouldn't get, and could confuse them.

miranstarr 05-05-2013 08:10 AM

Oh well, thems the breaks. I can't wait to see Thor and Loki's interactions.

Hawthorn 05-05-2013 08:31 AM

Yes, bring them on. Along with the ice-cream and the pillows to bite the pain into. :goof:

miranstarr 05-05-2013 08:37 AM

I'll be sure to bring along some Kleenex too!

Hawthorn 05-05-2013 08:44 AM

I'm to a point where in case Loki doesn't try to kill Thor this time around, I'll cry tears of joy.

love on the brain 05-05-2013 09:29 AM

Good tears or bad tears. I'll take everything! :bawl:
