i've seen a few pre-sherlock movies with Benedict aswell - if you care for my opinion
some movies/stories are less outstanding than others - but Ben's performance is usually good.

I think he was great in 'Hawking', 'Wreckers' and 'The Last Enemy' (althoug the latter could've had a better script). I think he is outstanding when he plays "troubled" or brainy characters.
He was good in 'Stuart' but totally outplayed by a superb Tom Hardy and I liked 'Amazing Grace' and 'Tinker, Tailor ..'. He does not have much screentime in 'Atonement' (thats a great movie), 'War Horse' and 'Boleyn Girl' but his performance is very solid.
I thought 'Starters for 10' was a crap movie - Ben's charakter is totally nerdy, but funny. His part in '4 Lions' is rather small.

i thought that Benedict was amazing in Third Star, To the Ends of the Earth, Small Island, War Horse...and everything else i've seen him in!

I haven't really seen much Benedict before Sherlock, I have to admit. That's why I need to buy some of his older movies, preferably the good ones, so I can update myself.

@L i N d $ @ y if you want to start with a good overview i would go for
- Third Star (Ben plays the lead character, who has terminal cancer)
- Tinker, Tailor ... (because its a great movie, where Ben plays a totally different character)
- Stuart or Wreckers (where he is not the sole lead, but those are good movies with lots of emotions and lots of Mr. Cumberbatch)
- Amazing Grace (Ben in stockings, and you see him age a bit)

Last Enemy, Episode 1 is for everyone who wants to get a good view of his buttocks
