The timeline is wonky.
You can use Emmett's timeline, but even that isn't canon as there was a six week time jump between Bay doing the blood test and finding out, and according to the timeline, they 'first met' in June. And yet, we still saw them in school. I think unfortunately most shows are scared to essentially graduate into more adult territory, but the thing about Switched is it has never really used school as a way to keep the students together. We got minimal Buckner scenes, and when they were used, it was to bond Daphne and Simone and then the tension with Bay and Simone. And even Carlton. I think with shows that have more ensemble teens they need a way to tie them together, but there's only four core teens on here; Toby, Emmett, Bay & Daphne. Yes, you have Travis and the extras such as Natalie and the other Carlton kids we have come to know, but Daphne always has a connection with Bay and Toby as Toby and Daphne are brother and sister, and Daphne and Bay are switchsters love that word, Bay and Emmett are exes/star crossed lovers, Emmett and Toby are in a band together, and Travis lives with Emmett and works at the car wash. For me, I don't need another two years of high school. I'd rather have season 3 be their senior year and watch them thrive and flourish. The Daphne kitchen story would have been a lot more interesting without the Jeff angle, which is why it failed to me and a lot of other people. They should show Daphne struggling with careers, as well as Emmett, too. Daphne has the benefit of being oral, but they should have them focusing on future careers. |

True.
Didn't mean for this to get OT with the timeline though. Just saying I want them to explore beyond high school. |

Love Daphne, but she annoyed me a bit tonight. Bad timing.

Yeah, Daphne definitely irked me. But she did seem bothered by Bay ignoring her, so I'm hoping that leads to something.

I was actually really proud of Daphne for stating the obvious regarding abstinence only.
Of course teens should know you don't need to have sex, and there are teens who shouldn't be, but to bury your head in the sand and say "Well, teens shouldn't be having sex" is all the education they need is ridiculous. Teenagers are going to continue to have sex and to be honest, even with sex education, a lot of them are still not using protection. It's not a religious issue (to me at least) at all. It's just a logical one. Reminded me of Donna Martin's infamous "If you know they are going to find a way into that water, shouldn't you teach them how to swim?" argument. So, go Daphne for that. |

Point blank: I think with either training, you're looking at people having sex and still getting pregnant and STD's. The issue is a lack of responsibility when you come down to it. So, for me, because of this, it will always come down to my value system and what I support. I do understand those who want Abstinence only training because it's a value-based sentiment. Teaching the benefits of why it's better to wait, even though you know and accept that not everyone will ultimately listen because they have free will choice. Sex Ed, at times, can appear, like it's plainly supplying someone with a permission liscence to go have teen sex and then condoning it {everyone is doing it, let's accept it, so here is what you can do}. On the most basic end of the other side, I get wanting to provide knowlege of a safer 'option' to help prevent some consequences if their will be the decision to go out and have sex. When I look out into society; however, and see the higher rates of kids 'having kids', I just question how effective it has been. I don't know, maybe a mix of the two is a good idea? Promoting abstincence as the best choice but providing back up knowledge just in case?! This will always be a divided issue, though. LOL. Daphne obviously feels passionate one way, others feel the other. LOL, I'm not going to lie, I was a little bit offended by the offhand comment that kind of came out Regina's mouth when she discussed the issue with Daphne. As if, those of us who support Abstinence training are somehow 'backwards' and 'not with the times.' __________________

Of course and I wasn't trying to be offensive. I think what you suggested, a combination of both. If you do just one, then you're probably setting them up for failure.
I think teenagers need to know their options simply because they are having sex and the issue is lack of communication. Pregnancy isn't even the big issue, the bigger one is STD's. That would be my fear is that is goes untreated because the person is somehow being made to feel ashamed for having sex and when it comes to that, you can't ignore it. Or even pregnancy. You can't ignore it and not getting prenatal care can be very very dangerous. I'm not condoning simply waving condoms and saying "Here, have a bunch of sex" but I wouldn't want kids ignoring the consequence of sex either, you know? Which is why I brought up Donna's argument in BH 90210. She was a virgin who believed in waiting, but understood that there should be some information regarding safety. I don't think promoting abstinence is backwards. I just don't know how realistic it is, just like it's probably not realistic to expect everyone who supposedly knows all about safe sex to engage in safe sex. There's downsides to both methods for sure. And in the end, kids are going to do what they want to do. Last edited by Slayerfan714; 06-28-2013 at 02:10 PM |
