I really appreciated your glossary! While I was able to figure out what most things meant from context, it was so nice to have the meanings put out like that! When he said "howlet" I thought he said "harlot" and thought " well thats inappropriate for a child's poem " but I knew I had misunderstood him LOL

I already knew "bairn" from Walt Disney's "Lady and the Tramp": Jock, a Scottish Terrier with quite a brogue, uses that term and Lady asks him what it means. I was proud of myself for remembering that

I second the thanks for the glossary, and it sounds better than it reads. His recitation was masterfully on point.

Six seasons on-in, and he is still one of the most complex and compelling characters on the show. I'm always surprised and delighted by his performances.

I don't have the transcript, but here's the poem he was receiting:

Sleep Well

Sleep weel, my bairnie, sleep.
The lang, lang shadows creep,
The fairies play on the munelicht brae
An' the stars are on the deep.
The auld wife sits her lane
Ayont the cauld hearth-stane,
An' the win' comes doon wi' an eerie croon
To hush my bonny wean.

The bogie man's awa',
The dancers rise an fa'
An' the howlet's cry frae the bour-tree high
Comes through the mossy shaw.

Sleep weel, my bairnie, sleep.
The lang, lang shadows creep,
The fairies play on the munelicht brae
An' the stars are on the deep.

Meaning of unusual words:
bairnie=child
munelicht brae=moonlit hillside
her lane=alone
Ayont=beyond
croon=wailing song
bogie man=ghost
howlet=owl
bour-tree=elder tree
shaw=flat ground at the foot of a hill

X
Thanks for posting meggy and so am I

Ok, Rumple reticing a Scottish nursery rhyme (with a Scottish brogue!) for his unborn child just may be my new favorite thing.. It was so adorable! And to make that beautiful scene even better..

I knew it! Only Bobby would choose something so Scottish.. And I bet he's recited that verse to his own children too, awww!

Such a sweet movie

Hmmm...is it just me or if Rumple and Belle were dogs in a cartoon they'd look a bit like this?

LOL in all honestly, I researched the poem because I could barely make out anything he said (Hey, no hate I'm from Italy ) I was just very excited by his scottish accent

But you're all very welcome And to be fair, if I didn't get obsessed with The Outlander books and Scottish in general (I'm surprisingly good at reading scottish....just not out loud..so useful) I'd have no clue!

I didn't know it was in Lady and the Tramp, but that's such a sweet parallel
The short grey and long bushy brown loks just fit!

Despite my user name, I'm American and though I have some Scottish ancestors, I didn't get quite a bit of that either! I was watching "Dear Frankie" and the brogue was so thick I had to put on the English subtitles! (My user name was inspired by my not so "wee bairn" who came home from school with a tongue twister: "Momma can you say 'Irish Wrist Watch' 5 times, fast?" - I kept saying "I wish wish wash" )
