Hotel California

On a dark desert highway … a stretch of “road” takes you up through California, past patches of ranches, past the trees and the mountains, with visible people few and far between. In the summer, the snow covered roads of the Sierras are but just stubble, barren grasses. There’s really not much to see aside from road signs, kids playing with their Sidekicks in the rear view mirror, and maybe a crafted, inanimate cow in the pasture just off the road. This is the real California. The one far from LA’s city lights. The one of hazy sunsets and hot, humid summers. A California of long stretches of road far from any conceivable civilization.

But every now and then, there is a break. And near the northern tip before the gravel of the highway jars its driver at the State border, is a quiet gem known only by few. Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light. My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim, I had to stop for the night. Gerald Walker’s Hotel California is a tempting site for any tired traveler. It’s almost like something out of a fairytale, luxurious looking in an otherwise dull setting. Rarely does a passerby resist the inexplicable desire to entertain curiosities. There she stood in the doorway, I heard the mission bell, and I was thinking to myself this could be heaven, or this could be hell. Always, the newest arrivals are greeted by the Walker daughters. Beautiful and provocative, as if their ethereal charm transcends every realm of comprehension.

In 1885, Gerald Walker was but a simple farmer, toiling away endlessly to make end’s meat. When he bought into the Devil’s illustrious promise of unlimited fortunes, he couldn’t possibly fathom the consequence of such an exchange. For the Devil isn’t one of diplomatic negotiations, and when Gerald signed his soul away, he unwittingly signed away the rest of his family’s. And so, such has been the case of the Walker family. And now, well over a century later, they look not a day older than the day Gerald Walker’s fortunes changed dramatically. How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat, some dance to remember, some dance to forget. The guests at the Hotel California are often quite worldly, but all too sad, as if their spirits had been eroded by the sands of time.

And so, Gerald Walker’s curse was shared. Mirrors on the ceiling, the pink champagne on ice, she said, ‘we are all just prisoners here of our own device.’ Patrons become residents as their souls are collected by the lower power responsible for the hotel’s grandeur. But Gerald’s misfortunes and burdens weigh heaviest, for he is to be a prisoner of his own ambitions for as long as his handler determines him compelling enough to keep around. Last thing I remember, I was running for the door, I had to find the passage back to the place I was before. Anyone who visits the Hotel California finds they are free to leave at any time, but as a sort of collateral, something must be left behind. Some guests find themselves at the hotel as consequence of someone else’s cursed obligation.
