Who is Jay Pritchett?
Jay Francis Pritchett is the patriarch of the family and father of Claire and Mitchell. He is married to Gloria and a stepfather to Manny; he is much older than Gloria and has been mistaken for her father more than once. At times there is a cultural clash between him and his wife and stepson because of their strong Colombian heritage. Most of the time, Jay manages to tolerate Manny's sensitivity and Gloria's attitude. Although he usually acts tough, he values all of his extended family members, and is generally seen as the one with the most common-sense. However, problems sometimes arise when he wishes to forget certain problems instead of dealing with them. He is a veteran of Vietnam, and runs a successful business, leading him to be the most financially secure member of the family.

On occasion, Jay enjoys traditionally manly hobbies such as watching football (Jay used to be a quarterback in college) and constructing model airplanes. He is not very comfortable with his son being gay, so when coming to Mitchell's and Cameron's place, he always announces himself by knocking loudly on the door, fearing he might find them having sex. A running gag in the series is Jay remembering Mitchell's behavior when he was a kid (such as naming his pets after Liza Minnelli) and wondering "how could I not know he was gay?" He seems to be evolving regarding homosexuality when he bonds with a friend of his who Mitchell suspects of being gay and forces him to open up

Ed O'Neill
Edward Phillip "Ed" O'Neill, Jr. (born April 12, 1946) is an American actor best known for his role as the main character Al Bundy, on the Fox Network sitcom Married... with Children, for which he was nominated for two Golden Globes. He is currently seen on the award-winning ABC sitcom Modern Family in the role of Jay Pritchett.

"Back in '68, when I was sweeping up hair in that barbershop, I had this mental picture of the family that, if I was lucky enough, I would end up with. Perfect wife, perfect kids... Well guess what? I didn't get any of that. I wound up with this sorry bunch. And I'm thankful for that every day. Well, most days."
Family Portrait (1x24)

"Don't get me wrong, I love my family. I love them in birthdays, I love them in barbecues, but do I have to love them in Hawaii?"
Airport (1x22)

Quote:
Has there ever been a more lovable actor than Ed O’Neill? He is like a big teddy bear you just want to run up to and hug. There is just something about him that probably elicits that reaction from his fans. For most of us, we first met Ed as Al Bundy on the classic 80s show Married…with Children. As amazing as it may sound, O’Neill was only nominated f0r two Golden Globes during his entire eleven years on the show. Neither of which he won. Al Bundy is one of the seminal, most loved characters of all time in the world of TV, right up there with Lucy Ricardo and Homer Simpson. Week in and week out O’Neill won our hearts with the sometimes oafish ne’er-do-well Al Bundy. Married…with Children would have never been what it was without O’Neill. People do not realize the amount of acting that O’Neill put into Al Bundy until they see him in real life. They take for granted that the character of Al just happened.

O’Neill’s other biggest endeavor is the ABC show Modern Family. On it, he portrays Jay Pritchett. Three more Emmy nominations, which he has not won again. About to film its sixth season, the show is presented in a mock-umentary style, inwhich the fictional characters talk directly to the camera. It may seem gimmicky, Amy Poehler’s show Parks and Recreation employs the same technique, but it really never wears on you or becomes a distraction. As always, O’Neill is brilliant and plays off of Sophia Vergara with ease.

The thing about talented actors is sometimes you take for granted how good they are. They make it seem effortless when it is really anything but. O’Neill is a national treasure who has been under-appreciated for far too long. We at FlickSided salute you, Mr. O’Neill and would love to give you a hug.
The Lovable Ed O'Neill

I found another way to bond (with Joe). James Bond.

“There’s all kinds of milestones in life. The kind you expect to live through: first kiss, birthdays, graduations, if you’re lucky a wedding or two, or even a new addition to the family. And then there’s the kind you never dream you’d get to live through again. That’s the best kind of all.”

I'll never forget how Manny said that for the first month he didn't even bother learning Jay's name

I love that even now Manny pokes fun at Jay. Its a much more playful relationship than his with Javier.
