Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland) is the 16 year old daughter of Claire and Phil, who is portrayed as the stereotypical teenager. Haley isn't extremely intelligent, and a little naive especially when it comes to arguing with her parents. She does show surprising cunning, such as when she carves a cell phone out of soap to win a contest. Haley is embarrassed by her dad, especially when he tries to befriend her boyfriend Dylan. She is concerned about her popularity at school which contributes to her being embarrassed by her parents. She is just starting to drive and is always talking on her cell phone to friends.

Sarah Hyland was born in New York City, New York, the daughter of actors Melissa Canaday and Edward James Hyland and sister of actor Ian Hyland.She has been acting since she was 5 years old, with her first role as Howard Stern's daughter in Private Parts. She went on in her career to portray such roles as Molly in the 1999 remake of Annie, and has played Brooke Shields' daughter, Maddie Healy, in Lipstick Jungle on NBC. Hyland is featured in an Olive Garden commercial along with actress Molly Culver, and has also appeared on Broadway playing the young Jackie O in Grey Gardens the musical.
Hyland currently portrays Haley Dunphy on the ABC sitcom Modern Family, for which she has won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series, along with the rest of the show's cast.
She started dating Matt Prokop (of High School Musical 3: Senior Year fame) in June 2009.
