The Knight of the Laughing Tree is a story Howland Reed's children tell Bran, it's set back at the tourney of Harrenhal where Lyanna was named the queen of love and beauty by Rhaegar. It's about a Howland Reed wandering into the tourney were he is seat upon by three young squires who call him a little frogeater and beat him up. Lyanna recognizes him as a Reed and jumps it to save him, beating off the boys with a tourney sword. She takes him back to the Stark tent where he meets Ned and Benjin. The invited him to join the celebrations, since he is one of their banner men, and he goes to dinner with them. Rhaegar preforms for dinner singing a song that brought tears to Lyanna's eyes until Benjin made fun of her and she dumps a cup of wine over his head (Any wonder Ned can't help but see Lyanna in Arya?). Robert is drinking someone under the table, and Ned dances with Ashara Dayne, but only after Lyanna puts in a word for him since he is too shy. Then Howland Reed spots the squires and the Knights they are serving. Lyanna spots them as well. Ned offers to equip Howland to fight them if he wishes, Howland is torn, he's from the swamps they don't ride horses or know lancing. He goes to the Isle of Faces to pray. Two days later while the mean squires' Knights sit as champions a mystery knight enters the tourney with a laughing gods tree face on his? shield, he? is short and has armor that seems to have been cobbled together from bits of other peoples. He? challenges and beats the three knights and tells them to better discipline their squires as his? ransom. That night several people swear to unmask the Knight of the laughing tree and the king declares anyone hiding is no friend of his... but in the morning the Knight of the laughing tree is gone. Rhaegar is sent by the King to find him? but it is said only finds the shield up in a tree.

Based on the description The Knight of the Laughing Tree is most likely Howlland Reed himself or Lyanna Stark, other theories exist but those seem the most likely to me.

It's quiet probably why Lyanna and Rhaegar ever spoke so the spark that started Roberts rebellion.

I hope they do put thsoe stories/flashbacks on ... so we get to see Sean Bean and Mark Addy again.. and a casting for Rhaegar and Lyanna.

aww love the Ned/Robert bromance... Though in the story Robert was just drinking someone under the table...
