First off, the first week's ratings don't mean a thing. Especially now, when the official season hasn't even begun yet, and the nightly head-to-head competition - when the real ratings race starts - won't be underway until the week of Sept. 21.

Still, in a cluttered TV environment, there isn't a new TV show out there that couldn't use an early boost.

And this past week, both here and in the U.S., there are two early signs of potential - emphasis on `potential' - breakout hits.

The relative early success of Glee (Global) and The Vampire Dairies (CTV) comes with an added bonus: neither show is terrible. They are both, in fact, fairly brimming with creative promise.

Of the two, The Vampire Diaries - 1.5 million viewers in Canada on its debut last Thursday - faces the toughest road ahead, thanks to the absurd logjam on Thursday nights that begins as early as this week, with the debuts of Survivor: Samoa on Global and the return of Parks and Recreation on Citytv.

Once the season proper begins, CTV will move The Vampire Diaries to earlier in the evening, to accommodate CSI at 8, which itself is being moved ahead an hour (from CBS's 9 o'clock time period) to accommodate Grey's Anatomy.

That will shield The Vampire Diaries here, but it won't help it in the U.S., where Vampire Diaries will face Bones (Fox), Survivor: Samoa (CBS), FlashForward (ABC) and Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday and Parks and Recreation (NBC).

Even so, there's a silver lining for Vampire Diaries - and it may pay dividends down the road. It has nothing to do with the total audience, which no doubt will drop once the real competition begins, but with female teens, its core demo.

The devil is in the details.

The Vampire Diaries set a ratings record last week for The CW in the U.S. Its total audience of 4.91 million viewers was the network's largest ever for a series premiere.

More importantly, it ranked as the night's top-rated program among all U.S. network series with female teens, which, let's face it, is Vampire Diaries' core following. I suspect those female teens aren't going anywhere, once the real season begins on Sept. 24. Are female teens going to drop Vampire Diaries for Survivor, Bones, FlashForward or - yuck - Parks and Recreation? As if.

So - The Vampire Diaries is a keeper. Period.

But take anything you hear about it being a big, mainstream hit with a grain of salt, until the end-of-the-month numbers come in, at any rate.
