All she has to do is break the link between her and Davina (plus those random kids) like the way Davina broke the link between Hayley and Sophie in S1. They're only using this as an excuse for Claire not being there. I really hope she does agree to come back for a select amount of episodes since she's not exactly tied to anything (not sure how big her Aquarius role is besides it's only 13 episodes, I think).

In the interview she made it seem like she was always up for it and can work it into her schedule with the Aquarius show, but hasn't gotten anything set in stone.

She had her leg all fudged up but she's good now so she better come back for the finale. I don't want no flashbacks. I want her back present time. If Plec wants to keep a job since TVD is pretty dead now, she needs to offer Claire more money. A house. Her soul. Whatever it takes to bring her back at least for 10-12 eps.

Omg it's so tiring seeing people think that tank show can survive, they definitely need to step it up with better characters and actors people actually want if they want to keep viewers.
