So, I do believe I can finally put to rest the “How old is Gibbs?” question! After yet another viewing of “Heartland” and bashing my head with a 2x4 over the fact that it took this long to sink in his age has been revealed!

If you watch carefully there is an American flag that say “76” on it which stands for the year 1976. This means that Gibbs was born in 1957 or 1958.

I give the two years because of this: If he joined the Marines when he was 18 years old (which is what we’re led to believe) and his being at the train station to go to boot camp he was born in 1958. However, he was in uniform (which he would have AFTER boot camp) and had a Private First Class (PFC) rank on his arm which means (technically- the show could’ve taken liberty with this) he was in the Marines for about a year putting his birth year at 1957.

Meaning Gibbs is (as of this year, 2011) he will be 53/54 years old.

Also, for all of those who might be sticklers for ranking and how long it takes to reach a certain rank Gibbs advanced through the Marine ranks correctly. In 1991, during Desert Storm, he was in the Marines for 15/16 years meaning his rank of Gunnery Sergeant was absolutely correct. Making the rank of Staff Sergeant takes between 10-13 years to make and that is the rank just before Gunny which means making Gunny at 15-16 years is perfectly acceptable.

As for him and Shannon and Kelly. He obviously met Shannon in 1976 and it depends on how long they dated and how long of an engagement they had is a tossup, but for arguments sake just say they dated a year and engaged a year that means they were married in 1978 and Kelly came in 1984. Kelly’s age was set in stone, but the marriage length starts from 1976 on, but more than likely occurring in 1978.

So there you have it.

Wow good job Andie! I figured he was in his early 50's but now with your research, it's more accurate.

Yup! It's been debated for awhile between me and some others. We all had agreed that he was between 50 and 55. After watching the episode again though it was like "DUH!"

Oh also, Gibbs being 53/54 years old means that he has another 6-7 years of field work before he would be forced to go to desk duty. NCIS (the real one) takes their agents off of field work at the age of 60.

Thanks for figuring that out Andie.
I always wanted to know how old Gibbs is (or my characters in general most of the time).
So we could have known it before finding that out about Ziva.

Palmer - 30-33
Ziva - 30-33
Abby - 31-34
McGee - 32-35
Tony - 37-40
Ducky - 65+
Vance - around the same age as Gibbs

And we know Ziva's age. Her exact age, day, month, year.

And she's still sooo young. 28.
