I think she did deserve it for that movie, as well

However, if she was given the Oscar back in 1998, perhaps she wouldn't have been taken seriously as an actress later. Think about this. A lot of actresses have won it when they were in their early 20s (eg. Mira Sorvino), and now, are dissapeared from the world of Hollywood. So, I think that Kate won it just in time

I think she did deserve it for the Reader, too, though. She had to speak with a german accent, and she also had to make us understand how difficult her situation was, I think she wanted to make us sympathize Hannah rather than hate her, and I think was the toughest part of her role as Hannah. Very well-deserved GG, though, for RR.

OT, I really think she was mostly robbed in ESOTSM. She should have won back in 2005.

Just imagine she would have won both Oscars in 2009 for the Reader and RR. That would have been a record.
ESOTSM was nothing but amazing. I don`t understand why she didn`t won the oscar then.

That'd be heaven

But, unfortunately, the Academy thought that both roles were leading parts, and since it's a rule that she's nominated for only one of those two, (it's a rule that there should be five women nominated every year- no exceptions) they had to choose one, and so they went with The Reader...

I can't understand why Hilary Swank was better than Kate

Hilary's performance was very predictable, while Kate's was more complicated, and more original. She had to make us understand the story and not be lost in that labyrinth of memories fading away. No wonder why Hilary's career was destroyed soon after her win... And same goes with Helen Hunt, who had won in 1998.

I prefer Kate`s performance in ESOTSM over Hilary`s in OMDB as well. Hilary wasn`t bad, but like you said, Clementine was much more complicated to play.
