So Mayim wrote an article about the Harvey Weinstein situation. It's gotten a ton of backlash, and quite frankly, I'm glad. On one hand, I am like her - I speak up when people I don't know or am not close with call me things like baby or honey. But her language is so victim blamey, that as a three time survivor of varying levels of sexual assault myself, I simply cannot get past it.

Quote:
Those of us in Hollywood who don’t represent an impossible standard of beauty have the “luxury” of being overlooked and, in many cases, ignored by men in power unless we can make them money.
People who aren't conventionally attractive are still sexually assaulted. For someone who has the level of education she does, this is really ignorant.

Quote:
I have decided that my sexual self is best reserved for private situations with those I am most intimate with.
Most (literally most) sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows, and a lot of the time they have some level of intimate relationship with them.

Quote:
I dress modestly.
Good for you. Sexual assault and rape doesn't just happen to people in short skirts. I was in boot cut jeans and a hoodie one of the times a guy grabbed me by the swimsuit area.

Quote:
If you are beautiful and sexy, terrific. But having others celebrate your physical beauty is not the way to lead a meaningful life.
Maybe don't lecture women on whether or not they're capable of having meaning in their life if they like when people think they're pretty.

God. She's done a lot of things I have disagreed with before, but this just rubs me so, so wrong.

I read the article she wrote for Grok about the situation, and, yeah, while it's good to have women stand up against this kind of thing, can we maybe not tear other women down in the process? Isn't the point that we have to support each other no matter the context, situation, clothing, profession, etc?

Her Grok article wasn't as bad as the quotes you posted here, Nicole (also very sorry for what you went through ), but there was still a criticism of women in the sex industry, which always makes me feel uncomfortable when she does that in her articles because, again, you can't really generalize these situations since every woman's experience/reason for being in that industry is different.

She really does have an issue with "(apparently that word is censored okay ) shaming" (putting in quotes because people think the term is black and white" and victim blaming. And feminism is not about tearing other women down or acting holier-than-thou.

Yeah, her New York Times article kinda felt like it was all over the place. And felt very much like a "me vs them," with her comparing herself to other women.

Just saw on facebook she posted a status update about the response, including, "I also see a bunch of people have taken my words out of the context of the Hollywood machine and twisted them to imply that God forbid I would blame a woman for her assault based on her clothing or behavior." But really, that's basically how it came across? And I'm not sure how Hollywood is necessarily supposed to have a different context when it comes to assault than anywhere else.

It's a real shame that instead of taking the criticism into consideration and taking another long, hard look at her words like she did with her video on polyamory, she's taken the "my comments got taken out of context" route that literally EVERY celebrity uses when they get backlash, but is rarely actually the case

Yep. She refuses to listen, learn, or own her mistakes. And you literally can't use the "out of context" excuse here, because it's not like someone took a sentence she said and pretended it was about something else in a new article. We are literally reading what she wrote verbatim on the platform she released it on.

Also does she understand how language works because "God forbid I blame a woman" literally means "Yeah I blame them, why you mad?"

It's nice to know that's not how she meant it, but, still, disappointed by her response. From comments I've seen, not everyone is being "vicious." Some survivors are actually, heart on their sleeves, explaining that her words (intentional or not) deeply hurt them. Hopefully by the time she does the TV interview, she'll have read a few of those comments and reflected on them.

Somehow I doubt it. She appears to be fully on the "people are overly critical of me and determined to make me look bad because I'm in Hollywood" train right now.

But yeah - whether she meant it that way or not (and honestly by some of the other things she said I'm not entirely sure she didn't mean it that way) she's got survivors telling her why that article was a mess and now she's trying to make us out to be bad guys. I'm not here for it.

I actually don't see a problem with that... I think I generally do hear "God forbid" used more sarcastically, but it's also used in the literal sense as she used it.

I'll probably watch her video interview from this morning at some point later when I'm less tired... From what I've read, she says her intent wasn't to say that what you wear will make a difference, and she was just writing about her personal experience - but then I still don't understand what point she WAS trying to make.

I've just read the article, and your comments, I didn't watch the video, maybe later.
I'm with Nicole on her reaction about the critics, she doesn't want to listen what the other are saying, even if it's not viscously said.
Maybe it's not completely intentional, but it's not the first time I noticed that when she is "just telling my story and giving my example", she also let us understand that she knows how to act and her example is the good one to follow, forget the others.
