Eeeck. I finally saw it online. As much as it pains me to say this...the film wasn't very good. Probably a good thing it didn't get a wide release, as it was also panned by most reviews.

Wow. Such very different impressions from the same movie. So interesting!

Yeah, no disrespect to the actors and crew involved, but I expected better of a Stephen Frears film (loved The Grifters.)

Yeah, it wasn't a masterpiece of course, but I thought it was nice. It's so sad that Joshs movies are mostly like that

I also watched Lay the Favorite but i wasted my time. What a ridicolous movie! I was so sorry for Bruce Willis and Katherine Zeta Jones, belive me! And as much as i was happy to see josh, i had my hands in the hair because of how he was totally underused! A character with no purpose!

Fortunatelly i watched Inescapable yesterday and i felt better. That is a movie! Good story and great performance by Alexander Sidding and Josh. He was more present and his character served something!

Go to watch THAT movie and don't waste your time with Lay The Favorite. For your sake!

I caught Lay the Favorite last night; they had it for rent at our local DVD vending machine for only $1.20.

Well, it could have been good. I could see elements of great effort made: Bruce Willis tried hard; CZJ was fine; Vince Vaughn was terrific and even Rebecca had Beth Raymer's idiosyncracies and mannerisms down pat, but honestly I just didn't care. Josh was there, thank God. I don't know why, other than as a receiver of much lip-smacking, which was fine by me, but other than that he didn't need to be there. He was pure eye candy and he did a fine job looking wonderful and being sweet and kind and normal and sexy. Shirtless, nice arms and gorgeous shot of his hand answering his cell. I got a deal for $1.20!

The entire passage of the story was so uneven. And yes, I get that Beth was supposed to be this sweet drifter-type, going from job to job and boss to boss, but there was no effort to establish those relationships. It was all SO quickly handled, so that when she left and came back (even to Josh's character) we didn't have a real reason to care. Everybody ACTED as if they cared she came back, but there had been no depth created so it all came as a surprise to the viewer. A big "huh?" We saw a desperation of the big bad deal going worse unfold on film but, really, the pitiful resolution to that was so uneventful, if felt awkward to watch them be so happy and dancing about. And they all lived happily ever after. Okay... A rather strange film. I guess it reads better as a book.

I'm ready for Josh to be Han Solo Jr.

I agree. The film could have been a lot better. I just think Rebecca Hall was miscasted and the film suffered from bad directing/poor editing. Also, Josh's character development was terrible. At first they meet in the casino, then they're dating, then they break up, then they make up and move to NY, then he's helping her beat her bookie. It just felt rushed.

Exactly. All the elements of a really good, fun romp of a movie were there. Excellent actors, quirky characters, an intriguing, unique story, an acclaimed director. I'm not sure if Rebecca Hall was miscast; I just think the burden of the whole film ended up resting on her. There were a lot of bits I really liked, tho, like the fact that even though the characters' methods for making money were dubious yet legal, most everyone was honest and good. They themselves were on the up and up and they expected that from everyone they did business with. They dealt with the not-so-good guys fairly and properly. All in all, everything was just very rushed and over all, it simply didn't work.

You're right about the editing -- a film is made or broken in the editing room. Maybe there were too many subplots. Who knows?

I haven't watched the movie yet, but judging by this deleted scene, I'll fastforward to just watch Josh's scene. Just a minute-long clip and I already want to smother this woman

God, Beth's voice....GRATES.

I think that I'd just fast forward to the Josh scenes, too. I had a feeling that this movie wasn't going to be all that it was cracked up to be, either.

He really needs to get a good movie break!

Yes, her voice does grate. I wonder whether that was a conscious effort on the actresses part. I've seen her in other things and her voice isn't like that.
