As part of a showing of the movie "Hairspray" at Hollywood Forever Cemetary on Sunday, July 31, the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles and film star Nikki Blonsky will host a sing-along during the screening. The movie, which was released in 2007 as a remake of the 2002 Broadway musical of the same name, which was in turn based on the 1988 John Waters, tells the story of a young woman who finds herself wrapped up in the civil rights movement of the 1960's in Baltimore, somewhat by chance. The 2007 film also stars a cross-dressing John Travolta, Kim Basinger and Queen Latifah. Doors to the event will open for VIPs at 6 p.m., and for the general public at 7 p.m. The screening will start at 8:30 p.m. Special props go out to GMCLA Executive Director Thom Lynch, for calling the sing-along "family-oriented" in a statement: “We are delighted to screen this wonderful film in such a unique setting with Nikki Blonsky, herself,'” says GMCLA Executive Director Thom Lynch. “We are deeply grateful to HBO and Hollywood Forever for their generous support of this family-oriented event.” Whether it was intentional or not, it's high time that LGBT groups rightfully reclaim the word "family." Our hats off to you, Mr. Lynch.

The hit Off-Broadway show ‘My Big Gay Italian Wedding,’ will be doing a very special production on Friday, August 26th and Saturday, August 27th at the Hilton Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, NJ! Lainie Kazan (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) will join the cast as Anthony's loud, outspoken, opinionated mother 'Angela Pinnunziato,' and Nikki Blonsky (Hairspray, 2007 Film) will star as 'Maria Pinnunziato,' Anthony's younger sister and aspiring Broadway star. Lainie Kazan is a legend of stage and screen, and has most recently been seen on Desperate Housewives as Susan's neighbor 'Maxine Rosen,' the owner of a housemaid company where the women work in lingerie. She received an Emmy nomination for her guest performances on St. Elsewhere as well as a Tony nomination for the Broadway stage version of her movie, My Favorite Year. She received a Golden Globe nomination for the film version. Lainie was also in the smash hit film Beaches and also had a critically acclaimed role as the mother of the bride in the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Nikki Blonsky, perhaps best know for her role as Tracy Turnblad in the 2007 film version of Hairspray, alongside John Travolta, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. In 2009, Blonsky made a guest appearance on the Ugly Betty episode "Dressed for Success", in which she played Teri O'Shaughnessy, an assistant at Elle, the rival magazine of the show’s fictional Mode. Blonsky also co-starred in the MTV mystery series Valemont in 2009. She later starred in the ABC Family series Huge. Current cast member and Billboard chart topping singer Kim Sozzi will reprise her role as 'Aunt Toniann' for the August 26th performance, while freestyle dance/pop singer Judy Torres will perform as 'Aunt Toniann' on August 27th. Anthony Wilkinson, the creator and star of the show as well as a 3-time Daytime Emmy Winner will also reprise his role as 'Anthony' for the Atlantic City run. Sonia Blangiardo, also a 3-time Daytime Emmy Winner, will direct. My Big Gay Italian Wedding focuses on two gay men as they plan their wedding and the people around them, including an overbearing Italian mother, a jealous ex-boyfriend, the wedding planner from Hell, and an assortment of family and friends. The production features choreography by J. Austin Eyer, costume design by Philip Heckman, and original music and lyrics by David James Boyd. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, July 27th at 10am on Ticketmaster.com. Shows are at 9pm at the Hilton Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Tickets starting at $45.
