The friendship doesn't appear to have been dropped they were just moved in different story directions which cutback the screentime available for them together since they were platonic and not romantic.

I think I briefly stopped watching at that time since I can't remember it and good I probably don't remember it because of my biasness towards Nik.

I do remember when Nikolas had Hayden shot though so... who knows.

^ Hayden/Curtis' friendship started months after the shooting. Hayden got Curtis as a PI to investigate her shooting then eventually he moved into Nik's place to protect Hayden. This I think was all before Hayden/Nik married.
