In movies, I have no problem seeing Topher as other characters (he's a good actor). For me, it might just be the sitcom genre that has me missing Eric. *Jim Halpert shrug*

T7S could be so, so funny while also developing characters and their relationships in a meaningful way. That's when the show was at its best, and Eric agrees.

Oh my God, I watched his new show, his character was trying new things and be adventurous, but of course he ended up being a baby about things, reminded me of Eric, but an older version of Eric.

Ultimately, forgetting or being too lazy / inept to put in the effort necessary to make stories that put character / character development first. Good Plot and punchlines naturally come from strongly-written characters and make for shows that stick with a person long after the episode airs. Going the other way around creates disposable media that ultimately says nothing about the human experience. The T7S writers needed to take a few novel / short-story writing classes.

If Eric and his family watched that show, Donna and their kids would probably be laughing up a storm about how much that character reminds them of him.

Yeah, that's true plus I have notice that often, but not w/ this show..

i felt like they sometimes forget their own characters that they wrote about..

The T7S writers excelled at that.

They also didn't give Eric enough passions outside of Donna and Star Wars, which is why he has no idea what career he might want. The writers had no idea what career he might want because they hadn't developed his character enough in that area throughout the series. The other characters -- not hard to come up with several ideas for them.

Becoming a cop for Kelso doesn't fit his character at all. That's a case of forcing a character to fit a plot idea. The writers provided the flimsiest of justifications: Kelso wants to be sexy forever, and he believes becoming a cop will let him do that.
