Comments: Oh, boy.

At this point in the comics, I was still following the show’s humor without thinking critically enough about it. I wrote Fez true to his post-S4 characterization, in which Kelso’s (and Casey Kelso’s) lack of respect for women’s boundaries became a major part. Later in the comics, he gets a significant growth-and-change arc to break him out of that awfulness.

T7S plays Kelso and Fez’s inappropriateness toward Donna, Jackie, and other women for laughs. Fortunately, the comics eventually hold the characters accountable for this bad behavior.

The second half of the comic is derived from conversations with Those ‘70s Comics’ earlier audience. Many people shipped Fez and Kelso and/or found Fez’s seeming sexual and/or romantic attraction to Kelso funny. Again, not a lot of deep thought went into the writing about this particular aspect of Fez (and Kelso’s relationship). This part of the comic was written simply for a laugh. As Kelso says in the last panel, maybe this was a mistake.

Also, the artwork on Fez’s wall is Kelso’s butt print. That idea came from Kelso putting his butt print on Hyde’s newly-waxed car in the show.

Comments: Hyde is a person of action more than words. In this comic, he shows Jackie he loves her, but she still mistrusts it because he hasn’t said the phrase, “I love you.” Through the character arcs I wrote for him, he becomes more comfortable with saying the words (and communicating in general). But at this point in his development (and his relationship with Jackie), he expresses his love for Jackie using the means he’s currently capable of.

Comments: I give an explanation for Fez’s bra-unhooking problem. In “Your Time Is Gonna Come” (5x13), it’s simply a joke with no character development behind it. It contradicts and ignores, however, Fez’s year-long (Point Place Time™) with Rhonda. So does “Everybody Loves Casey” (4x26), wherein we learn Fez never got past kissing with Rhonda -- which makes absolutely no sense considering what we see of their relationship and characters before that episode.

Rhonda refused to have sex with Fez because she’d never waited before with a guy and wanted their first time to be special since she loved him. But they certainly did more than kiss.

“Everybody Loves Casey” ignores the above, though, to come up with a reason for Rhonda to breakup with Fez and leave Point Place, as well as to deal with her portrayer no longer being on the show. I’ve discussed this terrible writing choice in depth previously, so I won’t repeat that discussion here.

Returning to the original point, Fez would not have needed to learn how to unhook a bra in season 5. So I came up with the idea that Nina demands he be able to unhook her bra in a certain amount of time. She’s an exacting person on the show, and such a demand is not beyond her characterization.

Comments: The show, in the last episode of season 5, intends to portray Jackie as truly having trouble choosing between Hyde and Kelso. I’ve discussed Jackie’s true quandary here, but in the comics I wanted Donna to remind Jackie of the differences between Kelso and Hyde so that Jackie could reevaluate what real, healthy love actual looks (and feels) like.
