I was glad to see that too. I loved her line about how it'd be worse if parents didn't try at all.

It makes me wonder about her mother.

It's hard to tell given how little we know about her if her mother left and Kailani felt like she couldn't leave her dad because he needed help, or if her mother passed away and Kailani still felt like she couldn't leave.
