And asking for photo IDs when our IDs are not free (and in some states not cheap - I had to pay almost $80 for my driver's license in Maryland) is a poll tax. Period.

Also, if you don't have one, you will need your birth certificate to get one, and if you need to be issued a new one, that also costs $$$, as I know because, and this is true, my mother lost my birth certificate. LOL.

It is, and even without the money, pre-COVID, going to the DMV to get an ID was a nightmare (and presumably will be again post-COVID). Chances are you will be there for hours, and a lot of people cannot afford to take that much time off of work.

Since I was able to schedule my most recent DMV visit during COVID, I was in and out in 15 minutes (although I did have to wait two months for an appointment to open up, lol), but when I got my ID in Maryland, I had to wait until I was going to a work site I didn't normally go to (but was close to the DMV) and get to work an hour early. And I had to do that twice, lol, because the first time they told me my second piece of mail was not sufficient and I needed to bring someone else. My license actually expired while I waited for another work day I could make the trip work. The time prior to that I was in college and ended up missing an entire day of class because I was stuck in the DMV for so long. That's just unacceptable imo. There's no need for ANYTHING to be that inefficient.

I mean, it's terrible that it is a literally country-wide universal disaster if you have to go to the DMV, lol. Like, no one ever talks about anything but what an absolutely terrible experience they had at the DMV. It should not be that way, and it ESPECIALLY should not be that way at the government agency where you get the legal IDs you often need to vote. I needed my driver's license to vote absentee here in Virginia - they matched my signature to my driver's license on file online.

It's sad. It's a universally accepted fact in the US that the DMV is an utter cluster****. And we never seem to ask how we can make it better.

When I worked at the public library, one librarian tried to demand I ask for a driver's license to issue a library card. **** that, lol. Any piece of mail will do.
