I remember my shock when he shot little Ben. I know there are no saints on Lost and tons of character have blood on their hands (Ben is a mass murderer, even) but harming a child is a sort of taboo in fiction, unless you want to make a character be seen as unredeemable.

The thing is, when he shot Ben, he wasn't as cold hearted as when he was Ben assassian. Did you notice his eyes were alsmost closed and his hand was shaking? Keep in mind too, Ben survived! Usually when Sayid shoots someone, they don't linger.

Yeah Sayid actually felt something before shooting Ben, usually he'd just do the kill and move on. He had no feelings around killing people but with Ben he did ... I know it's wrong but I don't hate him for it. He knew what Ben grew up to be and probably thought he could stop the events that happened by shooting him

It looks like he was trying to protect his friends the only way he knew how.
