My personal opinion is they may not be told outright directly what is going on, but that doesn't mean they sometimes they don't have a way of finding out.

I don't think it does. I think it means she's choosing to believe her friend. I am choosing to believe her too, but that doesn't make it fact.

She could have also found that out on her own

More likely she is believing her friend. We'll probably never know what actually happened there, just what we think happened.
