Continuing from the discussion in the last thread: I probably shouldn't get into this but oh well. I think it's ridiculous to say that Klaus "makes Caroline relevant." No single character can make another character relevant. What makes a character relevant is giving them their own POV, their own motivations, their own drive, their own storyline. I agree that Caroline has nothing going on right now, or this season, and it sucks. But Tyler isn't the reason, and Klaus isn't the antidote. The reason is that the writers don't care enough about her character to give her the storylines she should be getting based on the themes that are coming up this season. There are a whole BUNCH of ways in which they could give her a purpose, could have given her a purpose, right here and right now. The sire bond, for one thing. You're doing a storyline about Damon and the possibility that Elena's free will is compromised in her relationship with him - a storyline about DAMON and FREE WILL - and you're not giving Caroline a true voice but making her an SE shipper instead? Caroline, of all people? The girl who was repeatedly compelled and abused by Damon? That's criminal. It's awful. It's an absolute injustice to the character. If the writers weren't so chicken**** about bringing up Damon's wrongdoings, if they didn't just want to brush them under the rug and forget about them, the sire bond storyline could have been a PERFECT moment to revisit Caroline's trauma with Damon, explore the real reason why she doesn't like Elena being with him, maybe explore her hurt that Elena could have befriended and gotten close to the guy who abused her. But no, because DE is more important. But that's not the only thing they could have done. Let's take Klaus, since he comes up on here so often. Klaus's "flirtations" with Caroline DO NOT MAKE HER RELEVANT. If she exists just to be Klaus-bait and to flirt with him, that's not relevance, because we don't truly know how Caroline feels about it. The storyline is there for KLAUS, not for her. The last episode actually showed the perfect way to keep Caroline in a relationship with Tyler, give them BOTH something to do TOGETHER, without ever doing Klaroline. How? By concentrating not on the SHIPPY part of the storyline, but the ABUSE. Caroline and Tyler have both been abused by Klaus. Not only that, being victims of abuse from others (including their fathers) is something they have in common and have bonded over in the past. And overcoming an abuser, together, could be a fascinating and worthwhile storyline for them. I agree 100% with Candice Accola that in fact, Klaroline has a lot of parallels to Damon-Caroline, except that Klaus is obsessed with Caroline in a way that Damon wasn't, but that doesn't stop him abusing her. Caroline's sort of been in denial about being able to "manage" Klaus until now, whereas Tyler's tried to fight back against him directly, but in the last episode they finally figured out a way to manipulate Klaus using his abusive tendencies and get him to save Caroline without asking him to do it. So have the rest of their arc this season be about breaking free of Klaus's abuse. Delve into how Caroline feels about it, have her and Tyler working together to try and stop Klaus from controlling them, or negotiating with him or continuing to manipulate him so they can get their own way and break free of the grip he's imposed on their life where he treats them like pawns. I'll just say it one more time: It's ridiculous to say that "Character A makes Character B relevant." Nothing makes a character relevant except the writers being interested in that character in their own right. The only thing making Caroline irrelevant now is that, universally, the writers care more about her abusers than about her. |

Is it bad that the only thing I can think of after seeing the clip is:
Tyler's going to see pictures of Jeremy's chest. rout345 I agree with everything you posted. the kc "ship" should be deconstructed, the abuse should be addressed and be an example of how a "no" is a "no" and not a "not now". but with all the spoilers and the fact that kc still have loads of scenes after this week's episode, I really fear they are going to use her as the cure to Klaus' manpain.
