I don't think there is a scientific explanation for Smokey. Even if Darlton do come up with one, it will have several loopholes and will end up being unsatisfying for some people.

But Smokey's origin doesn't fascinate me as much as Smokey's loyalties? Is he good or bad? Or is he a "I'll go along with whoever's in-charge" type of thing?
