Simply said, you shouldn’t hold your breath. Though series creator Jon Bokenkamp concedes that Liz and Ressler “did grow closer, for sure” in Season 6, “We’re evenly split in the writers’ room” as to whether the FBI agents should get together, despite their chemistry. “Is there room for that to expand and change? Yes,” Bokenkamp says. “Will it? I’m not sure.”

Season 7 begins in the “fairly immediate” aftermath of Red’s ill-fated reunion with Katarina Rostova, per series creator Jon Bokenkamp, who describes Katarina as “the most formidable Big Bad that we’ve introduced.” And Red won’t be the only one caught in her crosshairs, he teases: “[Liz] thinks Katarina is dead and hasn’t seen her mother since she was 4 or 5. If she were to meet Katarina, she may not know that it’s her mother, and there may be an opportunity for Katarina to come into Liz’s life in a way that is anything but motherly.” Elsewhere in the season, viewers will “certainly get more clarity” on Red’s real identity, which remained a question mark in last spring’s finale. “More than any season before, we’re starting to fill in those blanks,” Bokenkamp hints. “Big pieces of the story snap into place in ways that we’ve really not been able to do until now.”

BONUS SPOILER!: That mysterious stranger on the bench, with whom Red spoke in the Season 6 finale, “will come back — and come back with some answers,” Bokenkamp says.
