Grave of fireflies is definitely NOT a work for kid.
Imagine someone ripping your heart out and then jumping on it repeatedly.Yeah, you're not even close to the pain this film makes you go through.
I wasn't prepared to this.

I recently watched Whisper of the Heart and From Up On Poppy Hill--two really amazing movies. They made me want to check out other Studio Ghibli creations.

...and I have to admit that although I really want to watch Grave of the Fireflies, I just can't--I know the storyline and it's so sad that I think I'll fall apart completely if I watched it.

Good news about Studio Ghibli!

Quote:
Studio Ghibli to release two movies simultaneously in 2013

On December 13th, Studio Ghibli announced that they would release two movies ”Kaze Tachinu“, which is directed by Miyazaki Hayao, and “Kaguya-hime no Monogatari“, directed by Takahata Isao, simultaneously.

It’s been the first time in 25 years that director Miyazaki and director Takahata’s works have been released at the same time since “Tonari no Totoro“ (“My Neighbor Totoro”) and “Hotaru no Haka“ (“Grave of the Fireflies”) were released as a double-feature movie back in 1988. Moreover, this will be the first time for Studio Ghibli to release two movies on the same day separately.

“Kaze Tachinu” is based on Miyazaki’s manga, which was serialized in the magazine “Monthly Model Graphix“, and it features the life of Horikoshi Jiro, the chief engineer of the Zero fighter plane. Hisaishi Joe is in charge of the music, and for its theme song, Studio Ghibli’s producer Suzuki Toshio made a public offer to singer Matsutoya Yumi when they attended the talk event for the release of “Majo no Takkyubin“ (“Kiki’s Delivery Service”) and “Omohide Poroporo“ (“Only Yesterday”) on Blu-ray discs.

On the other hand, “Kaguya-hime no Monogatari” will be the first work in 14 years for Takahata since “Hohokekyo Tonari no Yamada-kun“ (“My Neighbors the Yamadas”). Reportedly, Takahata started working on it since in 2005. It will be based on “Taketori Monogatari“, which is considered the oldest existing Japanese narrative, and Takahata is in charge of the original scheme as well as the scenario. Sakaguchi Riko, who is known for TV drama “Watashi ga Renai Dekinai Riyuu”, is also participating in the scenario.

Both “Kaze Tachinu” and “Kaguya-hime no Monogatari” will be released in the summer of 2013.

I tried watching the Live Action version and absolutely could NOT. So I don't think I could weather the anime either. When I read the story synopsis to find out what happened, I had to stop. It's too, too, too sad.

Actually I was wondering that, too. I just posted it the way I found it on Tokyo Hive.

I haven't seen all of them, of course, but I really loved From Up on Poppy Hill. Sometimes I really enjoy a simple, innocent kid-type animation because it's hopeful and refreshing.

I liked the different characters a lot in that movie, and there were so many things that made me laugh. But there was also a solid storyline and some sub-plotting. To me, that makes a good movie no matter what age group it's for.

And it was also just really pretty to watch.

I wasn't prepared to this.
I was not prepared for this either when I first watched it. I don't think I could rewatch it either. Too painful.

A couple weeks ago I watched Princess Mononoke. Very good film. Next on my list is Spirited Away.

My favorite Ghibli film is My Neighbor Totoro... probably for the simple reason that it was my first and I was a child when I watched it.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is my favorite. Although it took me years to figure out what it was called. I saw it when I was 9 or 10 on HBO I think. It left quite an impression on my young mind (the acid lake scene).

I had thought I had imagined it.
