He was a Hungarian actor most famous for playing Dracula in Universal's version of the movie back in the 30's. He was in a lot of the monster movies. Later in his career he appeared in many of Ed Wood's low budget movies.

That and because he's famous in general. Any time a show talks about 'monster movies' it invariably mentions Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney, and Boris Karloff.

If your in anyway into monsters or horror, those are the corner stones of your fandom. Those three represent the greats of the universal monsters, Wolfman, Dracula, the Mummy and Creature from the Black Lagoon.
