I hope Marriage Story is still on Netflix! It's still the best movie I've seen on there.

The :new: Ju-On show is on Netflix called Origins, a re-telling of the Japanese horror movie series.

I'm gonna watch it at some point but wow the reviews are pretty bad. Case in point:

FORBES review

I'd rather make up my own mind but I'm used to remakes being inferior

Crystal Clear 08-05-2020 07:45 AM

I did a full watch of Ju-On: Origins (it's a 6-episode show that refers to itself as being the genesis of how The Grudge movie series began) and this has taught me to watch things for myself instead of trusting critics.

I have to give it a huge applause  for being daring in a way that NONE of the Grudge movies have been before in terms of depicting gore, violence and sex.

There is a scene in Ju-On: Black Ghost that shows an attempt to remove a fetus from a womb that is somewhat similar to (but less gory than) a scene in episode 4 of this series.

Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by this series. It's a really strong prequel to the story.

I feel as if people only rated it low because it doesn't focus on the original Grudge family - Kayako and Toshio. This is NOT fair  and people were similarly mean to Ju-On: White Ghost even though that was a fantastic addition to the series with lots of strong sub-plots combining together to give a strong basis for the curse.

I would definitely recommend this series on Netflix. Be warned, however: there are some graphic depictions of killings and sexual assault.

^ I'm a little surprised because I thought most things were going back to normal, but then again there are a lot of lockdowns coming into effect again so I get it . They released Rise of Skywalker very early on Disney+ due to COVID-19 too.

been watching some more on here this month

both old favorites I haven’t re-watched in a while and older movies I haven’t seen before that I’ve wanted to watch and haven’t until now

I love the X-Ray function that shows trivia and stuff

Crystal Clear 09-01-2020 04:54 PM

I watched an Amazon Prime movie called Tag (Japanese with English subs)

Honestly, I hated the overall message (men as predators) and director Sion Sono did a much better job at finding gender balance with the epic 4 hour movie 'Love Exposure'

But I will say that the death scenes in 'Tag' are superb. Very similar to FINAL DESTINATION.

atwoodsmariano 09-04-2020 10:59 AM

different reviews that I think make good points

Crystal Clear 09-17-2020 02:37 PM

^ Thanks for those, Allison ;) as someone who never saw the original, I can't speak for any comparisons.

However, I've seen Star Wars fans saying that it suffers from the same problem as the 9th Star Wars movie TROS (attributing a women's qualities to a higher power rather than just applauding her for her natural talent)

:new: on Netflix - THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME

Thought this was an interesting perspective on the Mulan discussion.

atwoodsmariano 09-19-2020 02:08 PM

thanks for posting

I’m actually Chinese American born in the U.S. so I feel like the cartoon was always the one Disney animated movie I had a more personal connection with than the others

For all the liberties it took, it was nice to have some positive representation.

I think Ming-Na Wen did an amazing job voicing Mulan

I watched 2020's Rebecca sequel on Netflix.

Eh. Not for me.

Forced dream sequences, CGI spectacle, Lily James playing Mrs Winter more like Rebecca in the latter half of the movie, Armie Hammer exuding none of the charm or dark humor of Laurence Olivier as Maxim.

Remember in the original when Olivier played off the broken statue confrontation with Mrs Danvers as if he finds it hilarious that his wife was so scared of her? Well, Armie Hammer just plays it stiff and cold in the remake. Sorry but differences like this really irritate me. :irked:

Best performances in the movie are by Sam Riley and Kristin Scott-Thomas.

My 1 and a half stars out of 5 are due to their two performances and the nice cinematography.

Home Cinema research project

Hi there!

I'm a university lecturer and researcher conducting a project on how people engage with film online, particularly in light of Covid-19. If you could complete this short survey I would be very grateful.

Also, if you have any questions or comments about the project, Video on Demand, the future of cinema etc, I would love to hear them on this thread.

Link to survey: https://coventry.onlinesurveys.ac.uk...g-films-online.

Thanks!
Alex

:new: An interesting connection between Taylor Swift and MARRIAGE STORY [Netflix] - the film inspired her song lyrics ;)
