what's wrong with Black Panther?

The character, the actor, the film. The character from the comics is too all-around perfect, which makes him more like a DC character than a Marvel one. That might be somewhat ok in the context of the DC universe, but it's not ok in the Marvel universe. The only other Marvel character that's anything as perfect is Captain America and he's bloody annoying, except when Chris Evans plays him. And you see there how a good actor can save a badly-designed character. But the actor for the Black Panther is Chadwick Boseman, who's too stiff. I've seen him mess up roles as Jackie Robinson and James Brown and he messes up with Black Panther too. And Black Panther, being all too perfect, lacks personality in the comics, so he needs an actor to give him personality and Boseman doesn't give him enough. Then there's the film. It's the usual plastic Disney CGI-fest when it could be more and is treated as more by a lot of people. Worst of all, it's supposed to be a film about an African hero set in Africa and they got an American actor to play him and filmed it in Argentina rather than Africa. None of the major roles are played by actors born in Africa (Lupita is Mexican-born, btw) and African-born actors have to make do with small parts, while the choice roles go to actors from other places. Africa has lots of actors and Hollywood just ignores them. This film could have shown the world Africa, its people, its land, which is sorely needed considering how the world treats Africa. Instead, it just exploits the setting and ignores real Africa. Contrast with Marvel’s other major black superhero project, Luke Cage. Luke Cage is a show set in Harlem, filmed in Harlem, about African Americans, played by African Americans, with an excellent lead actor (Mike Colter) and a lead character who comes off living, breathing and full of personality. And while Black Panther verges on being a kids’ film, Luke Cage is for adults. All of which only makes me more pissed off that they cancelled it. What we don’t need is more plastic films like Black Panther. What we do need is more powerful, heartfelt stuff like Luke Cage.
