News & Politics Lite | The Lighter Side of News & Politics #11
While this is the Lighter side of the news, it should be noted that some topics within this thread could contain stories, images and discussions that may cause a triggering event. To be respectful of everyone on the El&I board we have divided the News & Politics thread into two separate categories. "Lite" & "Sensitive" This is the Lite thread. Topics discussed here should be the ones that fall on the lighter side of the news such as political cartoons, presidential campaigns, advances in science & technology....etc. The darker side of the news should be posted here News & Politics | Sensitive Topics this thread is clearly labeled so those who may be upset by certain topics can avoid them. Thanks. __________________

Thanks for the new thread, Kim.
I watched RBG, the documentary on Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and it just cast into sharp relief the way in which "minority" rights remain in jeopardy. And, sure, the documentary was set in the United States, but it's all so applicable worldwide. So Team Chrystia Freeland. __________________

Okay, who is Chrystia Freeland? Did I miss her?
Well, Canada wouldn't be having these issues with the US if Trump had fallen in love with Justin. Sadly, Justin will have to wait in the wings till Kim Jong Un and Trump break up. Though, he could write Trump "many beautiful letters" and see if that works. Seriously though, I wish they could just find a mutually beneficial plan. I really, really, hope that Trudeau doesn't cave and give the US everything. Oh, I was just checking CTV, and apparently they have reached an agreement-which is now called USMCA. Anyway, Trudeau is saying it's a great deal for all 3 countries. I guess time will tell. Apparently it's much better for online shoppers-so that may really help you, so You'll have to let me know if it will. https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/trud...tory-1.4116238 Quote:

Chrystia Freeland is out Minister of Foreign Affairs, so she's the one who's been in charge of the NAFTA negotiations. I don't know that she was necessarily the one negotiating at all times. But if not her, then it would have been people working under her. And I know that she's spent the last week or whatever doing it herself.
And I had to look her up to get her job title correctly, so that's taught me something else. Her mother is Ukrainian. So Chrystia Freeland also speaks fluent Ukrainian and Russian and she has an apartment in Kiev, capital city of Ukraine. So there could be a whole other collusion-related reason why Trump doesn't like her. Also, she's obviously smarter than he is, despite being about half his age. The new agreement hasn't necessarily been super welcomed here. I mean, better a deal than no deal. But, as anticipated, we've made a lot of concessions on our main industries: dairy, aluminium, steel and wood. So that's a lot of people who aren't best pleased with our government. A deal is probably better than no deal and Trudeau's got a whole year to prove that to those people who aren't happen before he's up for re-election. But, right now... it feels like we did out usual bending over in the name of staying friends with our neighbours to the south. __________________

He was probably terrified of a strong, intelligent woman like Chrystia.
Hopefully, despite Trudeau giving in on some things, it will help your economy in some way. Trump says it's a "scary time for young men". https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45724649 Also, just to make sure I'm exceedingly angry tonight, the US ended diplomatic visas for same sex partners. They're saying they have to be married here by the end of the year, to stay. However, many of the countries do not ALLOW them to be married. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45722400 No comment. Though, I'm sure my feelings are completely clear, on both articles. __________________

Thanks for starting this thread. 16-Year-Old Boy in Turkey Gets 4.5 Years in Prison for Kissing 13-Year-Old Girl
Wow. The sentence seems harsh to me, though I understand how a 16- year-old kissing a 13-year-old would be frowned on. Don't understand why thye would let it be videotaped since I'd guess they knew the law. Here's some news on the Catalan vote: https://abcnews.go.com/International...-vote-58198341 Based on polls the 7, 500,000 residents in that area are ''equally divided'' by this. __________________

Well, Turkey is turning into a Muslism extremist country under Erdogan, so that's not really surprising to me. OK, that's not entirely true. I am surprised the girl hasn't also been imprisoned, or lashed, or punished in a similar fashion.
As for the Catalan independence movement, I still maintain what I said at the time of the referendum. Madrid has no one to blame but themselves for any widespread popularity the movement is enjoying at present. The good news about POTUS mocking Dr Blasey Ford is that it's putting other Republicans' feet to the fire with interesting results, so close to the midterm elections: Republicans deplore Trump mocking Brett Kavanaugh accuser. Any attempt to force gay partners to marry in order to maintain diplomatic visas will be significantly influenced by that midterm election, too. Keep that in mind. And there are causes to hope: Beto O'Rourke: Democrats dazzled by rising star in Texas As the article points out, this guy doesn't stand much of a chance. But the point is that there are people like him out there. And there are people who will support them. __________________

That is a huge amount of time for a kiss. I get, along with you, why it's wrong, I just can't see that amount of time.
Sure, Republicans say they think that way, but they will still vote to confirm. I hope that's true, Sunny. That the midterms may restore order. The ways POTUS is going on and on that China is going to interfere, that tells me that the fix is in, except it's Russia, again. After all of the GOP members who traveled to Russia in the last few months...and ooh, what a surprise, Russia is already actively attacking, a majority of the West https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-45746837 It depends on which poll you look at, and which articles you read. Beto has made huge gains, and I think he may not win, but he's made a huge change in Texas. Beto is amazing. He's walked all over Texas, he's involved the people, he's changed a lot of minds. I've been supporting his campaign since February. Also, he's not taken one penny from a PAC. It's been amazing. He gives me hope. __________________

Thanks for these stories. Guess we shouldn't be surprised about the revelations of Trump's family & their apparent tax crimes, but it does end whatever was left of the myth that Don Trump is a self-made millionaire.

I'm shocked there may still be people who aren't aware that Trump inherited his money and is, in fact, a pretty terrible businessman. At least, when it comes to honest business ventures.
We're close enough to the midterms that I have to believe senators and governors up for re-election will think twice before absolving Kavanaugh, but we'll have to see: Brett Kavanaugh: Senators spar over FBI report on top court pick The thing I don't get is why the people supporting him are wasting their time doing so. They could easily pick another non-rapey ultra-conservative. This is not the only guy who believes guns are good, anortion evil and no one should be able to sue the president. __________________

Well he didn't just inherit money, he also apparently engaged in a tax scheme & reportedly committed fraud.
Republicans don't seem to care about whatever Kavanaugh did in the past whether they were crimes or not, so this is what we get. It's the Mitch McConnell way. __________________

I don't care what Kavanaugh did in the past, right now, either. He lied, repeatedly, in both confirmation hearings. He went into an angry, partisan tirade last week. That alone should have disqualified him. He cannot be trusted. All they care about is that he will cover Trump's and in return Trump will cover theirs.
They're in a big hurry because in a couple of weeks there is a vote on double jeopardy. That no one will be able to be tried in a federal court, and also in a state court. That will free up Trump's kids, and Trump once he's out of office. I told you Collins and Flake would say one thing and do another. We'll see, tomorrow, but they've said they'll vote yes. One Democrat, who lives in a red state, is voting yes, so he can be re-elected. Collins said the people protesting her were paid, and after revenge. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45766729 You know I'm a huge pessimist. We all know that. But you know what, I'd like to be wrong, just once, with everything since Trump's nomination. They're saying China is interfering in the midterms, so they can call the results fake (freaking hypocrites) and not count the results. Whatever. I'm SO defeated today. I just don't care right now. I'll get angry about feeling this way, and I'll fight even harder, though. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-45761466 Interpol chief Meng Hongwei vanishes on trip to China. I guess this isn't unusual, to some degree. They eventually say the missing people are under investigation. Both China, and France, are saying that it's an "alleged disappearance". __________________

Electing crooks and bullies is the GOP way, apparently. Voting along partisan lines is more important that doing the right thing.
The 21st century is the first time we've seen such political domination in the United States by that ilk and I guess this is the result. I don't hold much hope this morning that Kavanaugh won't be elected either. But I'm trying to hold out hope in the spirit of the American people. People disappear in China all the time. It could be that China is trying to control U.S. elections, but I think Russia's the most likely culprit. I mean, as you've said, we already know how Russia is working to help out the GOP. They do business the same way, so they help each other. __________________
