News & Politics | Sensitive Topics #5: Topics Inside Include: Death - War - Violence - Etc...

Trigger Warning - This thread contains topics that may be seen as troubling or upsetting.

Topics within this thread contain stories, images and discussions that may cause a triggering event. To be respectful of everyone on the El&I board we have divided the News & Politics thread into two separate categories. "Lite" & "Sensitive"

This is the Sensitive Thread. Topics discussed here should be the ones that fall on the darker sides of the news, that includes any kind of violence, sexual crimes, death, abuse, kidnapping etc..... The lighter side of the news should be posted here News & Politics Lite When in doubt if a topic falls in a certain category, just post it in here and a Moderater can move it if necessary.

Please be patient with us, this is a work in progress and this opening post may be tweaked a bit more in the coming days.

Thank you,

Kali, Mandie & Sunny

Trump stirs debate in remarks on American Civil War

US President Donald Trump has stirred debate by asking why the American Civil War happened, and pondering whether it could have been "worked out".

In a radio interview, he suggested the conflict might have been avoided if President Andrew Jackson had still been in office.

The 1861-65 Civil War between the northern and southern states was principally caused by slavery.

Mr Jackson, who was president from 1829-37, was a slave-owner himself.

"I mean, had Andrew Jackson been a little later you wouldn't have had the Civil War," Mr Trump said in an interview with a Washington Examiner reporter, broadcast on Sirius XM.

"He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart.

"And he was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War. He said, 'there's no reason for this.'"

Critics suggested the president appeared to believe Jackson was still around during the secessionist conflict, although he died 16 years beforehand.

Mr Trump continued: "People don't realise, you know, the Civil War, if you think about it, why?

"People don't ask that question, but why was there the Civil War?

"Why could that one not have been worked out?"

Mr Trump has frequently likened his campaign to that of the populist, seventh US president. In March he even visited Jackson's tomb in Nashville, Tennessee.

In the interview, Mr Trump noted that Jackson "had a very, very mean and nasty campaign" and "unfortunately it continues".

The president's remarks were labelled "totally bizarre" by the Washington Post.

But the journalist who conducted the interview played down the criticism of Mr Trump.

"Context is everything," tweeted Salena Zito.

What an idiot.

Four feared dead in British Columbia and Quebec floods

I don't know how triggering this is for people who have never been through a flood... But I do know my mother is clearly traumatized.

Florida mom charged in alleged beating of kids for only buying Mother's Day card

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville mother is facing two charges of child abuse after allegedly beating her daughters because they only bought her a card on Mother's Day.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said 42-year-old India Martin attacked one of her daughter's with a metal broom and punched her other daughter in the face. She then allegedly kicked the girls out of the house.

WJXT reported Friday that a neighbour saw them outside and called police. The neighbour told the TV station that girls were crying and terrified and said their mom had a bad day. The girls' ages were not released.

Martin, who works as a teaching assistant at a local high school, was arrested Sunday and released Tuesday after posting a $30,000 bond. Its unclear if she had retained an attorney who could comment on the charges.
