One kid died at the camp and there was a scene of a van going down the road and the kid being tossed to the side of the road like garbage.

It is when you read it, but it's funny in the movie. The kid drowned on their watch and they were like "Uh oh". Better to discard of it.

I may have missed it in the opening post, which I didn't read, but this movie was made in 2001....not the 80s. Is it here because it deals with the 80s?

Yeah, I have added a few things that were not made in the 80s but set there. I think that's still legit.
