Bastian is a young boy who lives a dreary life being tormented by school bullies. On one such occasion he escapes into a book shop where the old proprieter reveals an ancient story-book to him, which he is warned can be dangerous. Shortly after, he "borrows" the book and begins to read it in the school attic where he is drawn into the mythical land of Fantasia, which desperately needs a hero to save it from destruction.

The Childlike Empress: Bastian... Please! All you have to do is say my name
Bastian: But how?
The Childlike Empress: just say it...!
Bastian: yes...! I will say it
[crawl to the window and yell out the night]
Bastian: MOONCHILD!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS MOVIE.
The First movie was good, then it went downhill from there, but i still loved the movie.
I use to be scared of the bookkeeper, he scared the hell out of me.

I remember going to the movies with my mum and see this. Absolutely loved it! My mum got me the book right after and it is also just wonderful. Haven't seen the sequels and after what I've heard I shouldn't either...

Kel, I know that NES2 is out on DVD here already, but I don't think the others are yet. I bought my copy of NES2 from the US though, coz it worked out cheaper than buying it here.

As far as the sequels go, I love NES2, but I may be biased being a huge Jonathan Brandis fan. I was actually all ready to hate NES2 because I knew they weren't gonna have the original actors, but it turned out I was helplessly in love with the new Bastian. It isn't as good as the original NES, but then nothing can really compare to the magic of the original.

NES3, I saw on TV once and thought it pretty much sucked.

I think in the movie Bastian calls out something else as well as "Moonchild". I watched pretty closely last time I saw it, and it seemed to me that he yelled out 2 names. The second one kinda sounded like "Moonchild", but I think he may have also called out his mother's name. Isn't there a part earlier where he mentions how his mother had a beautiful name? Though as far as I know her name isn't ever mentioned even in the book. Anyway, in the book he names the Empress "Moonchild".
