This is also how I was able to re-discover 80's artists that I may have heard one song that I liked but didn't follow up further with it. So many artists I wouldn't have dreamed of listening to in the 80's because of just one song (even if that song was good), I'm finding out what I missed back then. The two examples that come to my mind instantly are Breathe and Johnny Hates Jazz.

They each had a huge hit in the 80's that were guilty pleasures for me to enjoy, seeing that I was trying to go beyond the mainstream. I didn't think that I could enjoy these two bands in the 80's. It's odd because I loved Go West and they had that same pop mentality that I was a little afraid of (I was a fragile kid back then. ) and plus both Breathe and Johnny Hates Jazz had hits that everyone liked and I didn't want to admit that I liked these songs, hense why I looked at it as a guilty pleassure during that time.

30 years later, Thanks to amazon, in one case, not only did I know the name of the singer associated with the band (Clark Datchler = Johnny Hates Jazz), but found some solo releases he did, listened to the samples, loved them and purchased them. Clark's voice is just so beautiful and his solo releases make my soul sing. I knew how good he was, I was just afraid to expore it back then. That's is what getting older and wiser means for me...taking chances on musicians that I would normally not take chances on back in the wondeful world of the 80's.

So, those who feel that one is only interested in the past musicially because of when these artists first started, to me, don't understand not only me but my approach to music. With Spandau Ballet back together and touring, with Kajagoogoo going strong, Marc Almond going strong, Jimmy Sommerville going strong, Howard Jones, Nik Kershaw, etc... Some of their music changes over the years, and you might not get the same vibe you once got with "Tainted Love', "Shattered Dreams" or "Cars", but one thing you do get is growth musically and seeing them explore the music realm to "re-invent" themselves, although in my eyes, they don't need to re-invent themselves. All they need to do is let their heart and soul steer them to the music they believe in and the fans will come and I feel that is what a majority of the 80's artists have done.

As Romeo Void once sang..."Never Say Never" and I now like both Breathe and Johnny Hates Jazz and am not afraid to admit it....

And it all started a few years ago when I decided to tell the world that I enjoyed the music of Marc Almond for a quarter of a century.

It is, it reminds me of the lyric from the song "Monoculture"
~Everything that is old, is new again~

Funny how someone like Marc Almond can be ironic without being ironic.

I still love him, tho.

If you want, I will find the lyrics to that song and post them here. It's one of those songs that I think he could have written about himself (Monoculture, that is).

Lyrics to Monoculture - irony at it's best.

Here are the lyrics to Monoculture.

Soft Cell – Monoculture Lyrics
Songwriters: BALL, DAVID JAMES / ALMOND, MARC
Monoculture lyrics © Universal Music Publishing Group

Why don't I just give up
And do myself a favor?
My life is slowly turning grey
And losing all its flavor
Everything the same
Again and again and again
Everything the same
Again and again and again

Over and over and over
Again and again and again
Monoculture
Over and over and over
Again and again and again
Monoculture
No change
The world has gone insane
Everything that's old
Is new again

Monoculture
Monoculture
Monoculture

Why don't I just give up
And submit to the great God of Bland?
All my exotic gestures
No longer in demand
Everything the same
Again and again and again
Everything the same
Again and again and again

Over and over and over
Again and again and again
Monoculture
Over and over and over
Again and again and again
Monoculture
Monoculture
It's the same
Monoculture
Monoculture
Mediocre
Monoculture
Monoculture
Mediocre

Over and over and over
Again and again and again
Monoculture
Over and over and over
Again and again and again
Monoculture

No change
The world has gone insane
Everything that's old
Is new again

Monoculture
Mediocre
The same
Ordinary
Boring
Mediocre
The same
Ordinary
Boring
Monoculture
