I think JK fundamentally loved Max. Liz was not his creation, Tess it was..

He has publically stated he loved Max and Liz. It's a televisions show, so angst is going to happen. And a teenage soap. So issues are going be abound, especially with Max's alien side unexplored. I totally think he loved Max and Liz. It could be a hell of a lot worse if he didn't. Max and Tess actually might have ended up together. The baby wouldn't have been dealt with... Max and Liz wouldn't have gotten engaged and married.

Stuff happened behind the scene at the time, with both the show and the actors. But the show was always focused on Max and Liz and their love story, and journey. It was brutal at times, and long and bumpy but given it was only 3 years, we are very lucky when it could have been a lot worse.

Personally I think Max is the one who looked the worst in all the angst. He didn't look very good even if I can see why he did what he did. At least Liz did what she did in "End of the World" because of the greater alien good, for Max because he would have destroyed in the future to lose Isabel and Michael. Max is the one a lot of fans got alienated from due to the obstacles late in Season 2.

So he had a funny way of showing. But one wouldn't say he loved Max over Liz. Liz always looked better in a way. Max is the one who slept with Tess, got her pregnant. Liz started it, but it was a big sacrifice. While Max was a foolish teenage boy. Who was known to have a temper, and be controlling when he especially was focused on something.

And Tess ended up a killer, of a beloved character. So no, she wasn't loved over Liz!

& he wrote some of Liz's worst episodes. EOTW - basically saying she was useless. HOM - making her nightmare come true, and departure - some nice words of Max were not enough! Yeah, I lost all respect towards him.

Still overall Max looked worse. Not saying everything was pitch perfect. End of the World is brutal to watch, but she still did it for the greater cause (which looks better in long the run) compared to a hormonal teenage boy depressed over a fight with his true love so he sleeps with her worst enemy, and gets her pregnant while allowing her to pull the wool over everyone's eyes over her agenda which ended up killing a close member of their inner circle!

Departure is a good episode. It has some flaws (namely anything Max and Tess related) but overall, Departure is wonderful. Liz is allowed to rant at Max for all she had done. It's a bittersweet episode, but definitely not one of the worst. Max defends Liz (abeit late). But as a Michael and Maria fan, it was a pretty good episode. And even the same with Max and Liz!

I agree, Heart of Mine is bad. Still can't watch it. I still don't know why they did it, to that extreme. Even though they were teenagers, and bound to make mistakes. You can't be perfect all the time.

But still overall we had it pretty good compared to some shows. He still tried his best. Of course he was early in his career. Would he create the same storylines if Roswell existed today. Hard to know after all his experience with television. Some of it had to do with dealing with behind the scenes drama and network interference But still, they tried their best!

I can see it was a pretty good episode for candies, but for dreamers? To me it was a depressing episode.

If people say departure came from nowhere - I say HOM came from nowhere,I never mind it.

Shows can still be good even if it's bittersweet. "End of the World" is depressing. "Departure" is bittersweet with a decent ending. It's about regret, love, obligation and truth. For Dreamers, I would say Departure was better than EOTW! Max and Liz loved each other, but their differences and obligation kept getting into the way until Liz found out the truth.

The fact Tess got her comeuppance, and the truth came out. I love Departure for that...

It because of "Off the Menu" which was supposed to air around then was pulled from airing due to a real life school tragedy. And therefore it aired right before the finale, instead of where it should have at the beginning of when Max and Tess were starting to investigate Max's memories of Antar. Doesn't mean that makes it a good episode. Because it's not. And it does come out of nowhere. And the DVDs make it worse by not putting Off the Menu where it should be... So it does come out of nowhere...

I will say Heart of Mine is definitely on the list of episodes that are bad, I will agree on you with that. But the others, I think there are good and bad benefits for Max and Liz and overall there is value to the episodes, and wouldn't classify them as bad!

But it's matter of opinion.

But still today, CW would love those ratings... And the show would be around a long long time!

Heck a show can be renewed on CW right now at .5 HH LOL.

And plus with the fan base Roswell had...

But a different time...

They have all the ratings too on the Smudge website, and wow....the ratings were good in comparison to now! I mean granted that was before streaming and netflix, etc. But those were good numbers, it definitely would have been renewed for several seasons these days

Interesting about the ratings....then vs now. Those numbers are an explanation that Roswell is still so loved and remembered. A whole generation watched and loved it

Yes because when you see that it was cancelled due to ratings you assume nobody was watching...when that wasn't the case! Well, I'm glad we got three seasons out of it as opposed to no Roswell at all

I wish OTM have been aired when it is actually supposed to. I think things could have been different ..

I know we had lucky to have 3 seasons, I just wanted quality.

Agreed. It is sad to think about what might have been at least we got a decent ending!
