I loved how strong they started out in s7, that to me was when it became apparent that they had grown closer to each other & were each other's best friends now. & seeing them team up so much really brought back s1 vibes

Me too! I also thought it was a good bookend to Season 1 I had missed them spending quality time together like that.

They definitely had that coupley vibe - & I really can't believe that the writers weren't aware of that. Plus, Sarah & Nick had asked for a Buffy/Xander romance in s7, so maybe they were considering it before they knew for sure it was the last season... I have no idea though

I wish Xander had gone patrolling with her during Season 5 after Riley left. I always felt that Anya refused to let him go many places with Buffy because of his feelings for her.

I could see that being the reason, she did have that 'no Xander' chat to Buffy in s4, & in Xander's visions in s6, Anya told him he had no business fighting demons with Buffy

Yep Lots of moments in S6 set up Xander's feelings for Buffy re-emerging. I wish the writers would have had the guts to actually go there for real.

I think that's exactly what it was - and even though I'm a proud Spuffy fan, I had always said that B/X was my first BTVS ship and I would be happy if they were endgame.

To be honest, the BA vs SB shipper wars got really brutal and tiring.

I think the shipper fights gave the writers indication of what was most popular in the show and I definitely think a lot of the CHOSEN script was proof that Joss was aware of the A/B/S triangle popularity. I've never seen Angel and Spike more petty than they did about each other in that episode and it carried on into Season 4 of 'Angel'.

Sadly, I think the Buffy/Xander fandom had been majorly sidelined by that point. Otherwise, Joss might have actually taken Sarah and Nick seriously when they requested BX.
