I know... and I guess it didn't help that Spike was only in season 5 and Fred died near the end of the season.

Yeah, but even with the time they did have there was a sudden shift when they stopped spending time together, around about 5x09

Yeah, and it seems when Spike wasn't a ghost anymore, they didn't know how to write in scenes for them anymore.
